Getting Started!

Choosing the Right Christian Journal

The first step to getting started with your Christian journaling journey is to choose a journal or notebook that feels right for you.

Now you might be thinking, “Do I need a fancy journal or something with a lock and key?”

Nope!

Any old notebook or journal will do. Sometimes it’s actually easier to get started with something plain and simple so that you feel more comfortable experimenting with writing and drawing.

But, if you’re looking for a journal that’s specifically designed for Christian journaling, there are many great options available. Look for a journal that has a layout that works for you.

Here are a few ideas on the types of journals you can buy:

  1. Blank Journals: These journals are very versatile because you are free to write, draw, scribble, and more without having any intrusive lines. These types of journals are great for people who enjoy being creative and want to explore different ways of expressing themselves.
  2. Guided Journals: These journals will often come with prompts or questions to help you ponder, reflect, and direct your thoughts. They are really helpful for beginners who might feel overwhelmed or who aren’t sure what to write.
  3. Scripture Journals: These journals are designed to help you with Bible study and will often include scripture along with spaces for you to write down verses, reflections, and prayers that are related to specific passages.
  4. Digital Journals: If you prefer typing over writing, you could choose a digital journaling app. Many apps allow you to organize your thoughts, add images, and even set reminders.

A couple more things to consider when choosing a journal:

  • Size: Do you prefer a small journal that you can carry with you or a larger one that you can use at home?
  • Paper Quality: Look for a journal with high-quality paper that is smooth to write on and won’t bleed or feather with ink or markers. This is especially important if you want to draw or paint inside your journal. The last thing you need is a big smudged mess!
  • Binding: A ring-bound journal or a journal with a lay-flat design can make it a lot easier to write and draw in.
  • Inspirational Content: Some journals include inspirational quotes, Bible verses, or prompts to help guide you. Think about whether you prefer a journal with this type of content or whether you would prefer to start with a blank slate.
  • Durability: If you are going to be carrying your journal with you then it is a good idea to choose a journal with a sturdier cover that isn’t too thin.
  • Layout: Do you like a journal with a lot of space to write, or one with prompts and inspiration to guide you?

Remember, the most important thing is to choose a journal or notebook that you like. Bonus points if it makes you feel excited about writing in it!

But like I said before, any notebook will do!

It’s better to just get started rather than overthink the journal you choose. You can always buy a fancier journal later when you have settled into a journaling routine.

Choosing the Right Stationery & Tools

While choosing the right notebook or journal itself is essential, the stationery and tools you use can really add to your enjoyment and fun as you use your journal! I absolutely love stationery so buying all sorts of journaling accessories is always a no-brainer for me!

Here are a few suggestions to help you get started:

  • Bible: Of course having your Bible handy is crucial for referencing scripture as you journal. You could invest in a study Bible that provides context and commentary.
  • Pens and Pencils: Choose pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, and any other writing tools you love using!
  • Stickers: You can add Christian-themed stickers to your journal to bring it to life.
  • Washi Tape: Washi tape can be used to add borders, decorate pages, or create tabs in your journal.
  • Journal Tabs: Pre-made tabs or stickers can help you quickly find specific sections or pages in your journal.
  • Bookmarks: A bookmark can help you keep your place in your journal or Bible.
  • Journaling Prompts: Use Christian journaling prompts to help guide you as you journal.
  • Inspirational Quotes: Use inspirational quote cards or printable quotes for added inspiration

Choose a Comfy Spot To Write

I find that one of the easiest ways to enjoy and stick to writing is by choosing or creating a quiet, private space to write and reflect.

A comfortable, quiet spot with no distractions can make all the difference!

Start Writing!

If you’ve never journaled before then it can sometimes be pretty intimidating!

I think the most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to journal – your journal should be a judgment-free zone. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling, just write!

And remember that your journal is for your eyes only so you are free to express yourself without worrying about what others might think.

Ideas To Help You Begin

Let’s jump in and take a look at a few ways you can get started.

Start with a prompt

One of the easiest ways to get started is by using journaling prompts or questions. Check out our journaling prompt library for a huge collection of prompts you can use right away!

Use a stream-of-consciousness writing method

Write whatever comes to your mind, without stopping to think or edit. This can be a great way to get your thoughts and feelings down on paper especially if you have prayed or worshiped before writing. Many people find that this is an incredible way to hear from God!

Write a letter

Write a letter to God, yourself, someone from the Bible, or even to someone else.

This can be a really great way to get started especially if you are feeling stuck.

For example, you could write a letter to God letting him know how grateful you are for everything he’s done for you and everything you have in your life!

Create a gratitude list

Write down things you’re grateful for each day. This can help you focus on the positive aspects of your life and it’s a great way of becoming aware of how God is moving in your life and blessing you.

Reflect on a Bible verse

Choose a Bible verse and write about what it means to you. Write down your thoughts, feelings, and insights, and how you can use the verse in your life.

Write a prayer

Write a prayer to God, expressing your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. This can be a great way to connect with God and ask for guidance and wisdom.

It’s also a great way to record your prayers so that you can look back later to see how God has answered your prayers and worked in your life.

Draw or doodle

Use art to express yourself! You could draw, doodle, or create collages.

Create a vision board

Cut out images, words, bible verses, quotes, and anything else that inspires and motivates you, and create a vision board.

Check out our article about Christian vision boards to help you get started! This article includes ideas and examples to inspire you.

Write a story

Write a story about your life, your experiences, and your journey with God.

Try a different format

If you’re really feeling stuck, try something different – use different colors, add drawings or doodles, or even try a different font.

Remember, don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. And of course, don’t worry about making mistakes – it’s all part of the Christian journaling journey!

Setting Journaling Goals and Developing a Routine

Okay, so you’ve got your journal and stationery, and you’re ready to start writing but before you do it would be a good idea to set a few journaling goals so that you can develop a journaling routine that you enjoy.

Setting Goals

When it comes to setting goals for your Christian journaling journey, it’s all about being realistic and specific.

Don’t try to set goals that are too big or too small. Instead, try to set goals that you can easily achieve while still being meaningful for you!

Here are a few examples of goals you could set when you begin:

  • Journal for 10 minutes each day: This is a great goal to start with, especially if you’re a Christian journaling beginner. Try to journal for 10 minutes each day, and see how it goes.
  • Write down three things you’re grateful for each day: This is a great way to start any journaling session. This not only will bring you closer to God with a thankful heart but it will also help you to change your perspective on life.
  • Reflect on a Bible verse or passage each day: This is a great way to deepen your understanding of Scripture and apply it to your life.
  • Write a prayer each day: Get closer to God by actually writing down your prayers. After writing down your prayer, spend some time in silence listening for God’s voice.

Tips On How To Develop A Routine & Stay On Track

Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to think about how you can stick to them and have fun at the same time. Here are a few tips to help you:

Find a quiet and comfortable spot

We spoke about this one earlier – it’s important to choose a place where you are comfortable that is quiet and without distractions.

Choose a consistent time

Try to choose a consistent time that you can commit to each day.

This could be first thing in the morning, before bed, or during your lunch break. Sticking to a specific time each day will help you to stay consistent and develop the habit of journaling.

Soon you’ll feel a bit lost if you haven’t journaled!

Start small if you need to

If you only feel like you can write for 5 minutes a day then start there. You can gradually increase your time as you become more comfortable journaling.

Don’t worry about being perfect

Your journal doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s okay if your handwriting is messy or if you make mistakes!

Be patient with yourself

Developing a new habit takes time and effort so don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or two. Just jump right back in and keep moving forward!

Don’t compare yourself to others

It’s easy to get caught up in comparing your journal to the many beautiful examples you see online.

But please, don’t fall into this trap!

Just like you, your journal is incredibly special and unique!

Celebrate your own style, and don’t worry if your journal doesn’t look like someone else’s

Make it fun

It is really important that you enjoy your journaling so make it fun! Use colorful stationery, stickers, or anything else that inspires you.

Be honest

Don’t be scared to be honest about your struggles, doubts, questions, frustrations, or anything else.

God already knows your heart so be open with Him and allow him to work in you.

Celebrate your progress

Don’t forget to celebrate the progress that you make no matter how small you think it is!

Journal with a friend

If you have a Christian friend at church, work, or school who would also like to start journaling why not team up and become accountability and support partners!

Use prayer

You can start and end each journaling session with prayer asking God to guide your thoughts and your writing. This can help you feel more connected to God and it can make journaling feel more intentional.

Reflect on your writing

Every once in a while take some time to read through your past entries so that you can reflect on how far you’ve come. This is a great way to remind you of God’s faithfulness in your life!

Final Thoughts

Getting started with journaling as a Christian is easier than you think! And it is fun too!

I really hope that this article has inspired you and helped you to jump in and begin writing and I hope that your journal will become a source of happiness, comfort, and spiritual growth in your life.
