When Herod heard Jesus had been born he felt threatened

Herod’s Fear and the Birth of the True King (Matthew 2:3-8)

Understanding Herod’s Reaction to Jesus’ Birth.

Power has a funny way of making people nervous.

When Herod, the king of Judea at that time, heard the news that a new “king of the Jews” had been born, he wasn’t celebrating. He was terrified! His throne, his authority, his whole kingdom felt threatened. And he wasn’t about to let someone else steal his crown without a fight.

Herod’s story reminds us that Jesus’ birth wasn’t just the story of a sweet baby boy born into a peaceful world. It was disruptive. Jesus posed a very real threat to Herod and the powers that wanted domination and control.

The Scripture

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’’’
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

Matthew 2:3-8 (NIV)

Understanding Matthew 2:3-8

“When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” Herod was shaken because he saw Jesus’ birth as a threat. Jesus’ rule threatened Herod’s fragile grip on power. But it wasn’t just Herod, the city’s leaders and people also felt uneasy. Why? Because real change is scary. Any time the old order looks like it might shift, people get nervous.

“And they replied, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea.’” Then Herod calls “all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law.” These were the religious experts, the people who knew the Scriptures inside out. They knew exactly where Jesus would be born, but instead of rejoicing, they felt threatened.

“Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” Herod doesn’t look for Jesus to worship Him. No. He wants to find Him so that he can kill Him.

He pretends he wants to worship the new king and sends the wise men to find Him. But it was a trap. The Magi are warned in a dream to leave without returning to Herod.

Faith in Action

Don’t let fear control how you respond to Jesus. Herod’s fear made him jealous, aggressive, and dangerous. Do you have any fears that stop you from truly allowing Jesus to be Lord in your life? Fear of losing control? Fear that others won’t accept your faith?

Not everyone will recognize or accept Jesus. As a follower of Jesus, you may very well face opposition in your workplace, relationships or even within yourself.

Seek Jesus sincerly not for personal gain. Herod never intended to worship Jesus. He was simply putting on a show. Think about why you follow Jesus, is it because you want something? To fix a problem? To impress others? Are there times when you try to manipulate God to get what you want?

Let God’s Word guide your decisions. The religious leaders knew where to find the Messiah because of Scripture but they ignored it. Allow God’s Word to be your guide instead of relying on your own feelings and beliefs.
