Surrendering When It’s Really Hard
Have you ever faced something so difficult that you simply didn’t want to go through it? Maybe it was a challenge, a loss, or a big fear about the future.
Even Jesus had a moment like this.
On the night before He went to the cross, Jesus went into a quiet garden called Gethsemane. It was late, His friends were tired, and He knew His hardest moment was just hours away. Jesus was deeply troubled and incredibly sad. He knew pain and death were coming, and, in His humanity, He honestly didn’t want to face it if there was another way.
But what Jesus did next is probably one of the most powerful moments in the Bible!
He didn’t run away; He prayed.
He shared His deepest feelings with His Father in heaven: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me.” “Yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39).
This simple but deep prayer shows us what it means to truly surrender and to trust God’s plan, even when it costs us. It shows us that real freedom comes when we let go of what we want most and trust that God’s will is best, even when we don’t understand.
Today’s Scripture
“Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

Breaking Down the Verse
- “Yet not as I will, but as You will”
Jesus is asking God if there’s another way—if the terrible suffering ahead could be avoided. But after saying what He truly feels, He chooses to accept God’s plan, even though it means pain and sacrifice.
This prayer is short, but it reveals two things: Jesus’ very real human desire to avoid pain and suffering, and His deep trust in His Father’s wisdom and goodness. - Prayer of Honesty and Surrender
Jesus models for us how to be real with God—telling Him our true feelings—while, at the same time, letting go and allowing God’s plan to win out in our lives.
Reflection: The Hardest and Most Freeing Prayer
In the garden, Jesus teaches us two things about prayer:
- Be Honest with God
Jesus didn’t hide His fear or pain. He told God exactly how He felt. God invites us to bring our real feelings, worries, and even doubts to Him. - Surrender Means Trust
Even though Jesus wanted the suffering to be taken away, He trusted that God’s plan was good. Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s giving over. When we let go of our own way, we find freedom in God’s better way.
This prayer didn’t take away Jesus’ pain, but it gave Him strength and peace. When we pray, “not my will, but Yours,” we join Jesus in trusting that God knows best and loves us deeply.

God’s way is best for me, today and always.
Prayer
Dear Father,
Thank You for listening to my heart, no matter what I feel. Help me to trust You and surrender my plans to You, just like Jesus did. When things are hard or scary, give me courage and strength to say, “not my will, but Yours.” Help me to believe that Your way is always best, even when I don’t understand. Thank You for loving me and never leaving me, no matter what.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
