Hating your father and mother controversial teaching of Jesus

Did Jesus Really Tell You To Hate Your Family? (Luke 14:26)

What Jesus Actually Meant In This Tough Teaching

Imagine opening your Bible and reading this: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother… he cannot be my disciple.”

Wait – what?!

That seems so strange, doesn’t it? Here’s Jesus, the guy who talks about loving neighbors and enemies, suddenly telling us to “hate” our own families? That can’t be right! It feels like a big contradiction at first glance. But Jesus has a way of shaking things up to make sure we are really listening!

When Jesus spoke these words, many people were following Him, some just out of curiosity or excitement. He knew that becoming one of His disciples was going to cost something – sometimes a lot. So He used strong words to grab their attention and get them thinking.

Back then, loyalty was everything and Jesus was making a bold point using the idea of the family as an example. He wasn’t telling people to hate their families or treat them badly. He was saying, “No relationship, not even your closest family, can take the first place in your heart if it means pushing Me aside.”

Today’s Scripture

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

Breakdown of the Verse

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother…”

Jesus was not commanding literal hatred or encouraging anyone to mistreat or neglect their family. Back then, and even in parts of the Bible like Genesis, the word “hate” was often a way to say “love less” or “put second.” It’s not about feeling anger or wishing bad things on your family. It’s a figure of speech, an exaggeration to make a big point.

“…yes, and even his own life…”

Following Jesus means putting Him above even our own dreams, ambitions, and comfort. We are called to surrender our whole lives, our plans, our preferences, even our desire for self-preservation, to Him.

“…he cannot be my disciple.”

Jesus invites everyone to be His disciple but he also wants us to understand the depth of what that means. To follow Christ is to recognize that He is above everything else. It’s a call to fully understand the seriousness of true commitment.

Faith in Action

How can this challenging teaching shape our lives today?

  • Consider your loyalties. Are there any relationships that sometimes come before your commitment to Jesus? Ask God to help you truly put Him first in every area.
  • Loving Jesus first doesn’t mean neglecting your family; rather, it puts your love for them under God’s perspective. When you love Christ most, you can actually love your family better – selflessly, with grace and love.
  • Following Jesus is not a half-hearted decision. Reflect seriously on what it may cost you – approval, traditions, or even relationships. Are you willing to surrender these things if called to?
  • Sometimes, obedience to Jesus will put you at odds with loved ones who do not share your faith. In such moments, choose faithfulness to Christ, while still showing honor and respect.
  • Ask God to hold and bless your family as you keep Him first. Pray for strength to love well, both God and family, in the right order.

  • What does it look like for you to “love Jesus more” than even your dearest relationships?
  • Are there situations where your loyalty to Christ is in tension with the wishes of your family? How do you respond?
  • How does embracing Jesus as your highest priority affect the way you love others, including your family?
  • What fears or reservations do you have about putting Jesus truly first?
  • Ask God to show you if there is any area in your life where He is not first, and write out a prayer of surrender.

Affirmation

Prayer for the Day

Lord Jesus,
Your words challenge me deeply. I want to put You first above every relationship and even above my own plans. Help me to surrender all to You and trust that when I love You most, You will teach me how to love others better. Give me courage when my loyalty to You is tested, and help me to reflect Your love in all my relationships.
Amen.
