When your sacrifices go unseen.
Have you ever felt like you are caught in the middle, being pulled in opposite directions by family, expectations, or love? Michal, the younger daughter of King Saul, Israel’s first king, and the first wife of David, knew that feeling all too well!
The biblical story of Michal often paints her as a “cold” or “bitter” woman, judging her for criticizing David. But underneath the surface is a story of heartbreak, loyalty, and being misunderstood at every step.
2 Samuel 6:16, 20 (NIV)
“As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart…
When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, ‘How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!'”

Michal’s Story
Michal’s story begins with love. In fact, she is one of the few women in the Bible who is explicitly described as loving her husband (1 Samuel 18:20, 28). Yet, instead of enjoying a happy marriage with a man she adored, Michal is quickly caught up between a jealous father and an ambitious husband.
When David’s life is in danger she risks everything to save him by deceiving her father, knowing that there could be severe consequences. Despite her love and courage, David runs and doesn’t look back, leaving Michal behind to face the consequences on her own.
Saul then decides to marry her off to another man, Paltiel. But when David returns as king, he demands her return, not out of love for her but as a political move, not caring about her feelings or Paltiel’s heartbreak. Scripture tells us that, “Her husband (Paltiel), however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. ” (2 Samuel 3:16).
It’s important to notice that by this time, David had already married other women during his years away from Michal. He had built a new life, taken multiple wives, and was now a stranger to Michal.
The last time we hear Michal’s voice in the scriptures is when she confronts David for dancing publicly and “exposing himself” in front of the Ark.
But let’s think about what she may have been feeling at that time – this was her husband, the one she loved and risked her life for. After years of separation (and being re-married against her will), David never checked on her, never rescued her and instead took multiple wives while she was abandoned by him. When he finally brings her back, it’s not out of love but for politics, forcibly ripping her from her second husband, who clearly loved her.
Now, seeing David’s dancing in front of the Ark, perhaps she didn’t see his holy passion but rather someone she once loved acting carelessly. Michal’s “despising” isn’t just about David’s undignified dancing; it’s about heartbreak, disappointment, and maybe even lost faith after being a pawn in the lives of her powerful father and husband.
The last we hear of Michal is in 2 Samuel 6:23 – “And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.“
The scriptures do not say that Michal was barren so many scholars believe that David may have distanced himself from her after this incident leaving her alone and isolated. Used by both her father and her husband, the real Michal – her love, loyalty, bravery, and pain – is tragically overlooked.
What We Learn From Michal’s Story
- Michal’s pain was easy to ignore and push aside when David returned in celebration. Is there anyone in your life who might be feeling sidelined, unheard, or misunderstood? How can you offer them compassion and a listening ear?
- Sometimes faith communities ignore real pain or squash grief, pretending everything’s OK. God knows your disappointments and understands your pain, so bring your heartbreak to Him, honestly.
- Michal’s love and loyalty were not returned the way she had hoped. We’re called to love, even when it’s costly. But we are also told to find our self-worth in God, not just in other people.
- It’s easy to judge others for their “attitude” or reactions. Michal teaches us to look for the story behind the pain.

Affirmation
God sees my hidden pain even when others misunderstand or forget me.
Prayer for the Day
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for seeing the pain and isolation I sometimes carry, just like Michal. When life feels unfair or I’m pushed aside by the choices of others, remind me that I am still held and loved by you. Help me bring my disappointment and sadness honestly to you, and teach me to look for those who also feel left out or unheard. Heal what’s wounded, restore what’s broken, and help me trust that you value me beyond my circumstances.
Amen.
