The Truth Behind Every Blessing Including Wealth.
Imagine getting everything you prayed for… maybe it is a new house, a job you prayed for, a savings account that feels secure. That moment when you look around, sigh with relief, and say, “I made it!”
The Israelites knew this feeling! They spent decades wandering through the wilderness, dependent on daily miracles from God to survive.
Every meal, every sip of water was a reminder: we need God.
But the book of Deuteronomy is set at a time when there would be a big change. They were on the edge of the Promised Land. Soon, the hard desert life would fade, and they would enter the land flowing with milk and honey!
Yet Moses stopped and warned the people to be careful. When you’re full and comfortable, it’s easy to forget where it all came from. Today’s verse sits at the heart of this warning. It reminds God’s people both then, and now that any ability you have and every blessing you enjoy starts with God.
The Scripture
“But remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
Deuteronomy 8:18 (NIV)

What Does Deuteronomy 8:18 Mean?
Let’s walk through the verse and break it down…
“But remember the LORD your God…”
For the Israelites who were just entering a life of ease, remembering wasn’t automatic. Moses says: Don’t forget God once you’ve got what you prayed for. He’s not talking about remembering facts, he’s talking about living every day with an awareness that God is at the center.
“…for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth…”
This line doesn’t promise sudden riches. Instead, it points out that anything we achieve in our lives – wealth, success, even the skills to work or the doors that open – all come from God. Sure, maybe you worked hard in school, showed up early to every shift, or learned to save. Still, the skills, creativity, health, and even opportunities themselves? Those are all gifts from God.
“…and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
God’s plan wasn’t for Israel to just be comfortable; it was so they could be a light to the world, a people through who He’d bring blessing, hope, and redemption. And now, because of Jesus, this covenant blessing includes us as well.
Don’t Fall Into Pride Or Self-Reliance
Deuteronomy 8:18 goes deeper than just finances. It’s about the posture of our hearts. Here’s what this verse teaches us for today:
God Is the Giver, Not Just the Helper – Sometimes we think God’s role is to support our plans, but Moses says it all starts with Him. Every pay raise, every business idea, even the ability to wake up and do your job, it’s all God’s gift.
Success Isn’t Just for Us – Why does God give us “the ability to produce wealth”? Yes, to meet our needs, but also to bless others, to advance His kingdom, and to be part of the story that’s bigger than ourselves.
Gratitude Guards Your Heart – When we remember the source of everything we have, gratitude bubbles up! Humility and thankfulness keep us close to God and grounded in reality, guarding us when we’re tempted to compare, worry, or feel entitled.
Stewardship, Not Ownership – If everything we have comes from God, we are God’s stewards, not owners. This truth can free us from anxiety over loss and pride over gain. We hold everything with open hands, ready to use it as God leads.
Faith in Action
How can you remember the Lord as the source of your ability, resources, and success? Here are some practical tips:
- Daily Gratitude: Start or end each day by naming three things you have, big or small, that are only possible because of God’s provision.
- Generosity First: Instead of waiting to see what’s left, make generosity a priority. It’s a powerful way to remember Who provides.
- Pray Over Your Plans: Before a big meeting, a job search, or financial decision, pause and ask God for wisdom, favor, and for Him to use your skills for something bigger than you.
- Celebrate & Remember: During moments of blessing (a promotion, a good harvest, getting the job!), pause intentionally to thank God.
- Check Your Heart: Get honest with yourself when a “self-made” attitude starts to creep in. If you catch yourself thinking, “Look what I’ve done,” pause and acknowledge God’s fingerprints on your journey.
Reflection Questions
Use these questions for quiet time, journaling, or honest conversation with someone you trust:
- What are some specific talents, skills, or opportunities you have? How do you see God’s hand behind them?
- Can you remember a time when self-reliance or pride snuck up on you after a season of blessing? How did that affect your gratitude or generosity?
- What’s one story you can tell about God providing for you or opening a door you couldn’t open on your own?
- In what ways can you use your resources (money, abilities, influence) to bless others or build God’s kingdom right now?
- How does remembering God as the true source of your “wealth” (however much or little) reshape how you handle stress, scarcity, or even success?
- Is there something you need God’s power and wisdom for today – at work, at home, or in any area of your life?
- How can you make gratitude to God a regular part of your life, not just in times of lack but especially in times of plenty?
Affirmation
God is the giver of all my gifts, talents, opportunities, and resources.
Closing Prayer
Lord God,
Thank You for being my Provider and Sustainer. It’s so easy for me to forget that every skill, job, opportunity, and even each breath is a gift from You. Forgive me when I take credit for what You’ve done, or when I slide into thinking I’m all alone or self-sufficient. Remind me, especially when life is comfortable or successful, that I need You just as much as on my hardest days. Help me use whatever I have to honor You and serve others well. Show me today how to bless those around me with the abilities and resources You’ve given, and keep my heart humble, grateful, and open.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
