How Mark 6:31 Teaches Us to Break Free from Endless Hustle
Busyness, if we’re honest, is worn almost like a badge of honor. Our calendars are full, our phones buzz nonstop, and our self-worth can creep unconsciously into how much we get done, how productive we look, or how “needed” we feel. The world applauds hustle, ambition, and the grind – sometimes even in church and ministry circles.
But did you know Jesus actually challenged this way of living? And not by giving us another productivity system, but by inviting us to do something totally countercultural: rest.
The Scripture
“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
Mark 6:31 (NIV)

Breaking Down Mark 6:31
Mark 6 tells the story of Jesus and his disciples being on the road. They are tired, overwhelmed, and surrounded by crowds, either wanting miracles or just curious. They’ve been ministering non-stop. So many people want their attention that they haven’t even had time for a good meal!
What does Jesus do? Does he say, “Push through! Keep working! You can rest later!”? Not at all.
He looks at them with compassion and says, “Come away with me. By yourselves. To a quiet place. And get some rest.”
Jesus isn’t indifferent to their exhaustion. He doesn’t see their humanity as weakness. He sees their busyness (and tiredness) and invites them not just to rest, but to rest with Him. It’s a personal invitation – spend time with me, step away from the noise, let’s get recharged together.
Faith in Action: Resisting the Temptation to Worship Busyness
How do we live out this idea in a practical and intentional way every day?
Admit Where Busyness Has Become an Idol
Is your schedule so packed that there’s barely room for breath? Do you ever feel guilty for resting, as if you’re wasting time or being selfish? That’s the voice of busyness making itself an idol. Be honest. Admitting the problem is the first step toward change.
Remember Who You Are – Not Just What You Do
Your value doesn’t come from how many tasks you complete, how busy you appear, or how indispensable you seem. You are beloved, simply because you’re God’s child. Resting is not losing ground, it’s reclaiming your true identity.
Schedule Rest
Jesus was intentional about rest. He scheduled it in! Try blocking your calendar, setting alarms for breaks, or making Sunday (or any day) truly a “quiet place.” Guard this time as fiercely as you do your busiest appointments.
Transform Rest into Worship
Rest isn’t just physical recovery. It’s time to be fully present with God, delighting in His love, hearing His voice, and letting your soul catch up to your body. Rest is an act of worship. Whether through prayer, reflection, music, or simply taking a walk outside with God, offer this time back to Him.
Learn to Say “Enough” – Not Just “More”
Culture says more is better. More hustle, more results, more recognition. The Gospel says your worth is settled. It is finished. You can say “enough” – and rest, trusting God’s provision and completion.
Model Rest for Others – Speak Grace Over Busyness
Be a culture changer! If you’re a parent, leader, or friend, encourage those around you to rest. Affirm that life isn’t just about spinning your wheels, it’s about enjoying God, relationships, and the simple joys He gives.
Reflection Questions
Use these questions for journaling, conversation, or deeper prayer.
- In what ways has busyness become an idol in your own life? Where has it crept into your identity or self-worth?
- How do you feel when you try to rest – is it peaceful, or do you battle guilt and anxiety? Why do you think that is?
- What do you imagine Jesus would say to you if He saw your schedule? Would He invite you to a quiet place?
- How can you practically schedule time for rest this week – what will you need to say “no” to?
- What does “rest as worship” mean to you? How would it change your relationship with God and others?
- Can you picture God delighting in you when you rest – not just when you’re productive? What does that stir in your heart?
Affirmation
I am loved and valued by God not for how much I do but because I belong to Him.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for showing us a better way. In a world that hurries, compares, and worships busyness, You invite us to a quiet place with You. Forgive me for the times I’ve made my value all about what I can do, accomplish, or produce. Help me see that my worth isn’t something I earn – it’s a gift You’ve already given.
Teach me to resist the idol of busyness. Help me to carve out times of holy rest, knowing I actually honor You when I pause and just be in Your presence. Fill my heart with peace that isn’t tied to my schedule or productivity and let my life show others that real freedom is found in You, not in doing more.
Amen.
