Devotional about creation and God's purpose

God’s Creation and Our Purpose (Genesis 1:1 and 31)

God Created Us With Intention, Purpose, And Love.

In the beginning… probably a few of the most famous and impactful words ever written! Genesis 1 isn’t just the opening scene of the Bible, it is the foundation for understanding everything that comes after.

When we talk about God’s creation, we’re not just admiring sunsets and mountains (although those are pretty spectacular!). We’re getting to the very heart of who God is and why He created us in the first place – you can’t truly grasp the story of redemption without understanding what happened at creation.

God didn’t just speak the universe into existence on a whim. Every star, every ocean wave, every small detail was intentional and purposeful. And when He created humanity, that was the pinnacle of everything He made! Understanding this can truly change how you see yourself, your purpose, and your relationship with God.

The Scripture

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Genesis 1:1 and 31 (NIV)

Breaking Down Genesis 1:1 And 31

Let’s take a closer look at each of these verses:

“In the beginning God created…” Right from the start, we see God as the Creator. Not “the universe randomly appeared” or “things just happened.” God made everything! Intentionally, powerfully and creatively. The Hebrew word used here for “created” is bara, which specifically means creating something from nothing. Only God can do that. No one helped Him. No one gave Him ideas. He spoke, and our universe was born.

“…the heavens and the earth.” This phrase is a Hebrew way of saying “everything.” God made it all. Nothing exists outside of His creative work.

Fast forward to verse 31: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Notice how it doesn’t just say “good.” It says “very good.” Everything He created had purpose, beauty, and perfect design. There were no mistakes, no “Oops, let me fix that.” Creation was exactly as God intended.

But here’s where the story becomes more personal. When God created humanity on day six, He made us in His image (Genesis 1:27). We’re not accidents or evolved tadpoles. We’re His image-bearers, designed with dignity, purpose, and a unique gift to know and reflect our Creator. God didn’t create us because He was lonely or bored. He created us to be in relationship with Him, to take care of His creation, and to reflect His glory.

So why does this matter today? Because when sin entered the picture in Genesis 3, that “very good” creation got broken. Humanity’s relationship with God was shattered. Death, pain, and separation became our reality.

But God didn’t give up on His creation or His purpose for us. The entire story of Scripture is about God’s plan to restore what was broken – and that redemptive plan centers on Jesus!

Faith in Action

Understanding God’s creation and our purpose shouldn’t just be head knowledge; it should change how we live every single day.

Remember your worth. When you’re scrolling through social media feeling “less than” or when life feels overwhelming, remember: you were created by God, in His image, on purpose. Your life has meaning and value because of whose you are, not what you accomplish. When you are tempted to compare yourself to others or doubt your worth, remember that God made you “very good“.

Take care of creation. God gave humanity the job of taking care of His creation (Genesis 1:28). That means how we treat the environment, animals, and resources matters. Simple things like not wasting food, recycling when possible, or appreciating nature are ways we honor God’s creative work. Look for ways to care for what God has made.

Live with purpose. God didn’t create you just to exist, He created you with purpose. Ask Him to show you what that looks like in your daily life. Maybe it’s being kind to the stressed-out cashier at the store, loving your family well, or using your gifts to serve others. Your everyday moments matter because they’re part of God’s bigger story.

Point others to the Creator. When people ask what makes you different or why you have hope, use it as an opportunity to share about the God who created everything with intention and love. The beauty of creation points to a beautiful Creator who wants a relationship with the people He made.

Reflection Questions

  • When you look at the world around you, what does it reveal about God’s character and creativity? How does recognizing God as Creator change your perspective on your own life and purpose?
  • Genesis 1:31 says God looked at creation and called it “very good.” How does knowing you were created “very good” in God’s eyes impact how you see yourself, especially when you’re struggling with insecurity or comparison?
  • Sin broke the “very good” creation God designed. In what areas of your life do you see the effects of brokenness – relationships, struggles, disappointments? How does understanding God’s redemptive plan give you hope for the future?
  • What does it mean to you personally that you’re made in God’s image? How should being an image-bearer affect the way you treat yourself and others in your daily life?
  • God created everything with purpose and intention. Do you believe your life has purpose? If you’re unsure, what steps can you take to discover or rediscover God’s purpose for you?
  • How does understanding that God intentionally created you change the way you approach challenges, setbacks, or seasons when you feel directionless? What does it mean that your Creator has a plan for you?

Affirmation

I am fearfully and wonderfully made by a creative, intentional God. My life has purpose and meaning because I am created in His image.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father
Thank You for creating this beautiful world and for creating me with purpose and intention. When I look at the stars or feel the warmth of the sun, remind me of Your power and creativity.
Thank You that even though sin broke Your perfect creation, You didn’t give up on us. You have a plan to restore and redeem. Help me to live with purpose every day, remembering that I’m made in Your image and loved beyond measure.
Show me how to care for the world You made and point others to You, the Creator of all things.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
