Have you ever thought about what happens after death? It’s a question that everyone thinks about at some point. As believers, we hold on to a powerful truth: Jesus Christ has conquered death!
In 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul proclaims:
“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (ESV)
This verse is more than just a statement of belief—it’s a declaration of victory and hope!
When Paul says that Christ is the “firstfruits”, he’s using an agricultural metaphor that his readers would understand. In ancient Israel, the firstfruits were the first portion of the harvest, offered to God as a sign that the rest of the harvest was on its way.
In the same way, Jesus’ resurrection is the first and most important evidence that more resurrections will follow! Because He rose from the dead, we too have the hope of resurrection.
Death no longer has the final say.
This promise changes everything. It means that our faith is not in vain, and our hope is not misplaced. No matter what challenges or sorrows we face, we know that death is not the end—it’s the doorway to eternal life with Christ.

Historical Context
Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to the church in Corinth. In his letter, on major issue he talked about was the denial of the resurrection of the dead.
Some believers were struggling to accept the idea of bodily resurrection.
Paul argued against this by emphasizing Christ’s resurrection.
If Christ had not been raised, he argued, then Christian faith would be meaningless (1 Corinthians 15:14). However, he confidently declared that Christ has indeed been raised and is the firstfruits of those who have died.
The concept of firstfruits comes from the Old Testament practice of offering the first portion of the harvest to God (Leviticus 23:10-11).
It was a sign of God’s faithfulness and a guarantee of the full harvest to come.
Paul uses this imagery to illustrate that Christ’s resurrection is just the beginning—all believers will follow.
Breaking Down the Verse
“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead”
Paul is not speculating; he is declaring a certainty. The resurrection is a historical and spiritual reality.
“The firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep”
Jesus’ resurrection is just the beginning of a much greater harvest. The phrase “fallen asleep” is a gentle way of describing death, emphasizing that it is temporary for believers.
This verse assures us that death is not final for those who are in Christ. Just as Jesus was raised, so too will we be raised. His resurrection is a preview and a promise of what’s to come.
Faith in Action
Practical Step: Live your life with resurrection hope even when things are tough.
Instead of fearing death or being overwhelmed by grief, remind yourself of the ultimate victory we have in Christ.
Write down one fear or worry you have about the future and place it next to this verse. Let the promise of resurrection change your perspective on life and death.
Example: If you’ve recently lost a loved one who was a believer, find comfort in the truth that they are not gone forever. You will be reunited in Christ.
