Keeping The Faith When Things Get Tough (Galatians 6:9)

The Power of Not Giving Up

Life can be really hard sometimes! Maybe you’ve prayed for someone to get better, but they didn’t. Maybe you’ve tried to do the right thing, but it only seemed to make things worse. Maybe you’ve worked hard at something for a really long time, but you don’t see any results. Maybe you’ve made all the right choices, yet nothing seems to change.

In moments like these, it’s really easy to feel tired and want to quit!

But in Galatians 6:9, the Bible gently reminds us not to give up: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

In this verse God is telling us that our kindness, prayers, and hard work are not wasted. When we keep going and keep believing, even when it’s hard, He promises that blessings and good results will come in His perfect timing. Faith means trusting that the harvest is on its way, even if we can’t see it yet.

Today’s Scripture

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
(Galatians 6:9)

Breaking Down Today’s Verse

Let’s look at this verse to understand what each part means:

“Let us not become weary…”
Being “weary” means feeling very tired – not just in your body, but in your heart, mind, and soul! Paul acknowledges that feeling tired is normal, but he’s encouraging us not to give in to that weariness.

“…in doing good…”
“Doing good” means all the ways we show God’s love—being kind, helping others, telling the truth, working hard, being patient, and more.

“…for at the proper time…”
This part is important! There is a “proper time” or a “right season” for results. God has perfect timing, which is so often very different from what we want or expect. Just like a farmer plants in one season but harvests in another, there is often a gap between our faithful actions and seeing the results.

“…we will reap a harvest…”
A harvest is what comes from all your work. For a farmer, it’s crops. In our lives, the harvest might be seeing someone grow in their faith, a relationship that heals, a habit that finally changes, or spiritual growth in our own lives. God promises that our good actions will eventually produce good results.

“…if we do not give up.”
Here’s the key! The harvest only comes if we keep going. If a farmer plants seeds but then stops watering and weeding, there won’t be a harvest. In the same way, the good results in our lives and the lives of others depend on our faithfulness over time.

Faith in Action

How can we live out this kind of staying faith in our everyday lives? Here are some practical ways:

  • Remember why you started. When you feel like giving up, go back to the beginning. Why did you choose to do what you are doing? Connecting with your initial motivation can inspire you and give you a boost of new energy that you need!
  • Take small steps every day. Perseverance isn’t about doing big things—it’s about doing small things consistently. Read your Bible for a few minutes, say a simple prayer, do one kind thing for someone. Small actions add up over time.
  • Rest, but don’t quit. There’s a difference between taking a needed break and giving up completely. In the Bible, we often see Jesus stepping away from everyone and everyting to rest and pray. If you’re feeling burned out, it’s okay to rest—just don’t use rest as an excuse to stop altogether.
  • Find a community. We weren’t meant to persevere alone. Find friends who can encourage you when you’re feeling tired, and who you can encourage when they’re struggling.
  • Celebrate small wins! Don’t wait for the full harvest to find joy. Notice and celebrate the little signs of growth and progress along the way.
  • Focus on today, not tomorrow. Jesus taught us to pray for “daily bread”—not for a lifetime supply all at once. When perseverance feels overwhelming, just focus on being faithful today. Tomorrow will have its own challenges and grace.
  • Pray for strength. God knows that it can be incredibly difficult to persevere on our own. That’s why He offers us His strength when ours runs out. Simple prayers like “Help me keep going” or “Give me strength for today” connect us to God’s power.

  • Think about a time when you wanted to give up on something important. What made it hard to keep going? Did you persevere or quit? What was the result?
  • What “good thing” in your life feels most tiring right now? It could be a relationship, a ministry, a job, or a personal goal. Why does it feel hard to keep going?
  • What “harvest” are you hoping for in your life? What good results are you working toward, even though you can’t see them yet?
  • Who is someone you know who shows great perseverance? What can you learn from their example? How do they keep going when things get tough?
  • What helps you most when you feel like giving up? Is it talking to a friend, praying, remembering God’s promises, or something else?
  • How have you seen God’s perfect timing in your life? Was there a time when you had to wait longer than you wanted, but the timing turned out to be right?
  • What’s one area where you’ve already persevered and seen a harvest? How can remembering that success help you in your current challenges?

Affirmation

With God’s help, I will not give up. I will keep going, trusting for the harvest.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for encouraging me in Galatians 6:9 not to give up when life gets hard. Sometimes I feel tired and wonder if what I do really matters. Please give me strength when I feel weak and help me keep going, even when I want to quit.
Remind me that You see my efforts and that Your timing is always perfect. Help me to trust You and believe that a good harvest is coming, even if I can’t see it yet. Thank You for Your promises and for being with me every step of the way.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
