Devotional about rest - Matthew

Letting Go of Guilt and Receiving Real Rest (Matthew 11:28-30)

Why You Can Stop Feeling Bad About Resting – Jesus Says So.

If you have ever felt uneasy or even a little “naughty” for taking a nap or closing your laptop early, you are absolutely not alone! Our culture has trained us to celebrate hustling. “You can sleep when you’re dead!” says some coffee mug somewhere. Finish more. Push through. Never stop.

In Jesus’ day, people lived under just as much pressure. There were heavy expectations for them. Society said that if you were to be seen as a good person, you needed to follow lots of religious rules and work hard to earn God’s approval. But all that striving only led to anxiety and guilt – never peace. When Jesus saw how tired, overwhelmed, and stressed-out His people were, He didn’t give them a lecture. He offered rest. “Come to me,” He says, “you don’t have to carry it all.”

The Scripture

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Faith in Action: How to Rest Without Feeling Guilt

Call Out the Guilt
Next time you feel guilty for resting, rest anyway. Ask yourself: “Where did I learn that rest is bad? What am I afraid will happen if I slow down?”

Remember: Jesus Isn’t Measuring Your Worth by Your Workload
You are loved because of who you are, not because of what you get done (or don’t get done). Let that truth soak in. You are God’s child, not His employee.

Practice Saying “No” to Overwork
Your time is precious. God didn’t create you to burn out. Draw boundaries – stop answering emails at bedtime, take that day off, protect your space for rest.

Celebrate Small Steps of Rest
Rest isn’t just for weekends and holidays. A walk, a deep breath, turning off your phone, a quiet prayer – these all count. Celebrate when you choose rest over hustling.

Ask God to Re-train Your Thinking
Pray honestly: “God, help me let go of this voice that says I always have to prove myself. Teach me to rest in Your love, not my own effort.”

Your Faith Grows in Rest Too
Some of God’s best work in you happens while you’re still and quiet, not just when you’re busy. Let Jesus speak to your heart during those pauses in your busyness.

Reflection Questions

  • What thoughts or voices make you feel guilty about resting? Where do you think those come from? A parent, teacher, church?
  • How would your week look different if you truly believed Jesus wants to give you rest?
  • When was the last time you rested well without guilt? What helped you let go? How can you recreate this time?
  • Are there certain people or activities that help you rest and recharge? How could you make more space for those?
  • What boundaries could you set to protect rest even when others might expect more from you?
  • How does remembering that “rest is a gift, not a reward” change your view of rest?

Affirmation

Rest is a gift, not a luxury. My worth isn’t measured by how much I do, but by Jesus’ love for me.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for seeing how tired I get – inside and out. Sometimes I feel bad for slowing down, afraid that I should be doing more. Forgive me for believing the lie that says rest is only for the lazy or the “finished.” Teach me to hear Your kind voice instead – the one that says, “Come to me and rest.”
Help me release the guilt, put away the pressure, and truly pause. Remind me that I’m loved, right now, just as I am. Show me how to rest in Your presence, enjoying the simple gifts You give.
And as I rest, fill me with new strength not just for the tasks ahead, but for delight, joy, and connection with You and others.
Thank You for the freedom to rest.
Amen.
