God I'm tired devotional

When You Are Burnt Out And Tired (Matthew 11:28)

Comfort and hope for those carrying heavy burdens.

Do you feel exhausted? Not just tired in your body, but worn out in your heart and mind? Like exhaustion has seeped into your bones? Maybe life’s demands, stresses, or constant busyness have left you drained. You’re not alone, and even Jesus saw and acknowledged how hard life can be when He gave us today’s scripture.

The Verse

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)

Devotional for tiredness and exhaustion

Scripture Reflection

Jesus didn’t speak today’s devotional verse to a well-rested, carefree group of people. Instead, He gave it to people who were burdened not only by the weight of everyday life but also by the spiritual pressures placed on them by the religious leaders of the time.

At that time, the spiritual leaders heaped endless rules and regulations on top of God’s people, leaving many of them feeling like they could never measure up or find rest for their souls. In contrast to the overwhelm that they felt, Jesus invited them (and us) to come to Him to find rest, especially when we are worn out and overwhelmed.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The first line of this scripture doesn’t say, “figure it out”, or “try harder”. Instead, He calls us to come to Him and promises a deep, lasting rest that can only be found in Him.

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me…”

A yoke is a wooden harness that joins two animals together so that they can share the work. Jesus uses this image to show us that when we follow Him, it doesn’t mean that life will be easy, but it does mean that He will be right next to us carrying the load.

“For I am gentle and lowly in heart…”

Unlike the legalistic and strict leaders of the day, Jesus is gentle, humble, and approachable,e drawing close to us in our weakness.

“You will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

In the final line, Jesus promises a rest that restores your inner self, your soul. When you work closely with Jesus, even your work, struggles, and worries become lighter because you are not carrying them alone, and He gives you the strength you need to move forward.

Practical Applications (Faith in Action)

  • Jesus calls you to come just as you are – tired, anxious, or burnt out. The first step is simply telling Him honestly, “I’m overwhelmed. I need Your rest.”
  • Make it a daily practice of naming your stresses, worries, and failures before Jesus in prayer. Picture yourself physically handing each one to Him. Use your journal to record things you are trusting Him with.
  • Instead of carrying burdens alone, choose to walk with Jesus throughout your day. Take time to pause, asking Him for wisdom, strength, and peace in the middle of tasks, not just at the day’s end.
  • Spend time reading about Jesus’ life and teachings, paying attention to how He handles people, stress, and interruptions. Ask Him to teach you gentleness and humility.
  • Learn to set boundaries and create times of real rest in your days and weeks. Trust that God can handle the world while you rest.

Thought-Provoking Journaling Prompts

  • Describe a recent time when you felt most exhausted, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. What burdens were you carrying? How did you try to handle them?
  • Can you describe what “coming to Jesus” looks like in your daily life? Create a list of things that are stopping you from creating a space for quiet time in your life.
  • When you imagine Jesus’ heart, gentle and humble, how does this challenge or comfort you, especially when you feel exhausted?
  • What “yokes” (expectations, responsibilities, pressures) feel heavy or crushing in your life right now? How could you let Jesus help you carry them?
  • How do you usually look for rest when you’re overwhelmed? Do those things truly restore your soul, or just distract you?
  • Can you remember a time when you sensed God’s rest, even in a busy or stressful situation? What was different about that moment?

Affirmation

Jesus promises me rest. I am not alone, and I can rest in His promises.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
I am tired and burdened by many things. Thank You for Your open invitation to come to You, just as I am, so that I can find true rest. I lay down my fears, stresses, and exhaustion at Your feet. Teach me to walk closely with You, learning from Your gentleness and humility. Carry what I cannot carry. Restore my soul, and help me trust that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Fill me with Your peace today.
Amen.
