Bible verse about financial worries and stress

God’s Provision vs Financial Fear And Anxiety (Matthew 6:25-26)

The Weight of What-Ifs.

I don’t know about you but money worries often hit differently, don’t they? Often, worrying about money is not just a fleeting thought; it’s more like a heavy weight that sits on your chest. It’s the knot in your stomach when an unexpected bill arrives. It’s the horrible fear of “what if?” What if the car breaks down? What if I lose my job? What if there’s never enough?

In our world, our sense of security is so often tied to numbers on a screen, the balance in a bank account, or the stability of a job. When those things feel shaky, it feels like we are shaky, almost lik our foundation trembles.

Jesus knew we would struggle with this. He knew we’d naturally worry about food, clothes, and the roof over our heads. So, in the middle of His most famous sermon, He tackles our fears and anxieties about money head-on.

The Scripture

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
Matthew 6:25-26 (NIV)

Devotional about money anxiety

Breaking Down Matthew 6:25-26

Let’s take a closer look at what Jesus is saying:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry…”
This is a command that is given just after teaching that you can’t serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). Worrying about money is ultimately a sign of who we’re serving. If God is our Master, then we can trust our Master to take care of His servant.

“Is not life more than food…?”
I love this line because Jesus is saying that as humans, we are so much more than just our material needs. Your value, your purpose, your soul are infinitely more significant. Always worrying about the basics misses the entire point of the life God has given you.

“Look at the birds of the air…”
Jesus, then points to His creation with birds being the perfect example. They don’t have a 401(k), a side hustle, or a pantry stockpiled for years. They live day to day. And yet, they are fed. Not because of their own anxiety-driven striving, but by the faithful provision of their Creator.

“Are you not much more valuable than they?”
If God takes such meticulous, creative care of creatures that have a fleeting, small value in the grand scheme of things, how much more will He care for you? You are not just another part of creation; you are made in His image and redeemed by His Son who died for you. Your value is immeasurable so therefore, His care for you is also immeasurable.

Faith in Action

How do we live this out when the mortgage is due and the bank account is low? Here are a few ideas:

  • Audit Your Anxiety: The next time financial fear rises, pause. Ask yourself: What am I truly afraid of? Is it homelessness? Humiliation? Failure? Pray and bring this specific fear to God. Naming it will help to rob it of its power and it allows you to place that specific need into God’s hands.
  • Create a “God’s Faithfulness” Log: Start a journal or a note on your phone. Every time unexpected money or a gift comes in – a check in the mail, a gift from a friend, a bill that was lower than expected – write it down. When you are feeling anxious about money, read through it. Remember how He has provided before. It builds faith for the future.
  • Stop Comparing: So much financial anxiety and worry comes from looking at what others have. We scroll through social media and see vacations, new cars, and renovated kitchens. We compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel. Actively choose gratitude for what you have instead of focusing on what you don’t have. Finding contentment with what you already have is a learned secret to peace (Philippians 4:11-12).

Reflection Questions

  • When you feel financial anxiety, what is the specific “what if” scenario your mind usually jumps to? What does that reveal about what you fear losing?
  • Jesus asks, “Is not life more than food?” What are the “more” things in your life (relationships, purpose, faith) that you often forget when money worries take over?
  • Look outside. Watch a bird or a squirrel for a minute. Do you truly believe you are more valuable to God than that creature? Why is that sometimes hard to internalize?
  • What is one practical step you can take this week to demonstrate that God, and not money, is your ultimate source of security (e.g., giving, creating a budget prayerfully, deleting a shopping app)?
  • Read Matthew 6:33. What does it mean to “seek first his kingdom” in the context of your financial decisions and worries?
  • Can you recall a specific time in your past when God provided for you in an unexpected way? How does that memory help you today?
  • How does constantly comparing your financial situation to others’ impact your peace? What is one way you can protect yourself from this trap?

Affirmation

My security is not found in my bank account but in my Heavenly Father’s hands.

Closing Prayer

Father God,
I confess that I’ve been looking at my bank balance more than I’ve been looking at You. Forgive me for making money my source of security instead of You.
Right now, I choose to lift my eyes to you. I look at the birds outside and I remember that You are their provider. And I am your child. You know every single need I have. Help me to seek You first – Your ways, Your righteousness, Your kingdom.
I trust that as I do, You will provide everything I need.
Replace my fear with a spirit of peace and gratitude. Help me to be a good steward of all you entrust to me, and to rest in the security of your love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
