How to Respond When You Encounter Jesus.
The shepherds didn’t hesitate. After hearing the angel’s announcement about the Savior’s birth, they didn’t debate, analyze, or wait for a better time. Luke 2:16 says they “hurried off” to find Jesus.
I love that these men weren’t educated theologians or religious scholars. They were working-class shepherds – people who spent their nights in fields watching sheep, people who were often looked down upon in society. Yet they were the first to see Jesus, and they were also the first to worship Him after His birth.
But what happened next was just as important. They didn’t keep it to themselves! They were the first to spread the good news. They became the first evangelists, telling everyone about what they had seen and heard.
The Scripture
“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.”
Luke 2:16-17 (NIV)
Understanding Luke 2:16-17
Let’s take a look at what makes the shepherds’ response so important.
“So they hurried off…” The shepherds didn’t delay. They moved immediately. The Greek word used in this line tells us that they moved with urgency and eagerness. Even though they had responsibilities and work to do, when they heard about the Savior, everything became secondary.
“…and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.” The shepherds found exactly what the angel had told them they would find (Luke 2:12). God’s word proved to be true.
“When they had seen him, they spread the word…” The shepherds were so excited about what they had seen and heard that they went out and told everyone and anyone who would listen. Their faith became their testimony.
“…concerning what had been told them about this child.” The shepherds shared both what the angel had announced and what they had personally witnessed.
Luke 2:18 adds that “all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” The shepherds’ simple faith and bold testimony impacted everyone who heard it! Your story matters, and your willingness to share what you’ve seen and experienced can impact others more than you realize.
Faith in Action
Respond with urgency. When God speaks, when the Spirit moves, don’t delay. It might be something simple like a nudge to reach out to someone or a need to be quiet and spend time with Jesus.
Actively look for Jesus. The shepherds didn’t wait for Jesus to come to them, they went to find Him. Make time to seek Jesus through prayer, worship, and reading your Bible.
Look for Jesus in the ordinary. You don’t need perfect circumstances or a mountaintop experience to encounter Jesus. Look for Him each day in your normal, everyday life.
Share. Don’t keep your encounters with Jesus to yourself. Tell your story. Share what God has done, how Jesus has changed you, what He’s teaching you. Never underestimate the power of simple faith!
Reflection Questions
- The shepherds “hurried off” immediately after hearing about Jesus. Have there been times when you felt that God was speaking to you, but you second-guessed yourself? What might have happened if you had acted immediately?
- What responsibilities or priorities could be keeping you from pursuing Jesus with the same urgency the shepherds showed? What needs to be rearranged in your life?
- Luke 2:18 says people were “amazed” by the shepherds’ testimony. Have you ever shared your faith and seen someone impacted by it? How did that experience affect you?
- What would it look like for you to “hurry off” and seek Jesus this week? What specific, immediate steps can you take to prioritize encountering Him?
Affirmation
My simple faith and honest testimony can impact others in powerful ways.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father
Thank You for the shepherds’ example of immediate, urgent faith. Help me respond quickly when You speak, seek Jesus actively in my daily life, and share boldly what I’ve seen and experienced.
Give me eyes to recognize Jesus in the ordinary moments and the courage to tell others about Him.
May my testimony impact others and point them to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
