What Does It Mean to Work ‘As for the Lord’?
Have you ever found yourself asking, “Does what I do every day really matter?” Whether you’re folding laundry, meeting deadlines, caring for little ones, or fixing a leaky faucet, it’s easy to wonder if any of it is really meaningful or significant, especially in God’s eyes. Some jobs seem big and important. Others feel small or unseen. But in the Bible we see that every job, no matter how small or ordinary, becomes sacred when we do it for Jesus.
When Paul wrote his letter to the Colossians, he was writing to people from all walks of life – slaves and free, rich and poor, men and women. Many of them were stuck in roles they didn’t choose or didn’t love. Paul wanted them to know: You’re not just working for a paycheck or a person, you’re working for the Lord! This new perspective changes everything. Suddenly, daily routines become an act of worship, and our ordinary moments become opportunities to please God.
The Scripture
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 3:23–24 (NIV)

Breaking Down Colossians 3:23–24
“Whatever you do…”
Paul doesn’t limit his message to just those doing “spiritual” or “important” jobs. Whether you’re cooking, driving, sending emails, or picking toys off the floor – “whatever you do”, means everything.
“…work at it with all your heart…”
God loves wholehearted effort. He’s not after perfection, but sincerity. Putting your best into every job, no matter how small, honors Him. Even if you’re not passionate about the work, you can bring heart to it.
“…as working for the Lord, not for human masters…”
You’re not just working for a boss, a manager, a spouse, or even yourself. Every task is an opportunity to serve Jesus. When you clean up after others, help a customer, or write up a report, you can picture Jesus right there, receiving your work as a gift.
“Since you know you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward…”
Earthly rewards come and go and you may never get recognized or rewarded here, but God sees every act of faithful service. He promises an eternal inheritance of joy, purpose, and even treasures in heaven.
“It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
At the end of the day, your true boss is Jesus! That’s reason enough to give your best, no matter who’s watching or what you get in return.
Faith in Action
- Turn Routine Tasks into Worship: Start your work by praying, “God, I do this for You.” Let every job become an offering to God.
- Check Your Motives: Ask yourself who you’re trying to please – people, yourself, or God? Shift your focus upward.
- Do Your Best Even When It’s Unseen: God notices the work that others don’t see. Excellence in the little things brings Him joy.
- Look for Ways to Serve Others: Remember, every workplace or home is a mission field. Small acts of kindness, help, or encouragement really can make a real difference!
- Remember God’s Reward: If you feel unappreciated or overlooked, remind yourself that God keeps perfect records. Nothing you do for Him is wasted!
Choosing to “work for the Lord” changes how you show up, how you treat people, and even how you see yourself.
Reflection Questions
- How does your attitude change when you remember you’re working for God, not just your boss or your family?
- Is there an area of your work or daily responsibilities where you tend to give less than your best? Why?
- How can you turn an ordinary, even boring, task into an act of worship this week?
- When have you felt unseen in your work? How did God encourage or strengthen you in that season?
- Who could you serve at work, school, or home in a special way? What would that look like?
- What would change in your day-to-day routine if you really saw every job as a way to serve Jesus?
- How does knowing your reward comes from God shape the way you face hard, thankless, or overlooked jobs?
Affirmation
Today, I dedicate my work to Jesus and every effort is an act of worship and service to Him.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for giving my work, no matter how small it may seem. Help me do every task with a heart full of worship, serving You first and foremost. Keep me from working only for praise or reward, and fill me with joy in the ordinary. Use my hands, words, and attitude to show Your love to the people around me. And when I feel overlooked or tired, remind me that You see every effort and will never forget a single act done in Your name.
In Your powerful name I pray, Amen.
