When God Works In Unexpected Ways (Isaiah 45:15)

When God Seems Hidden

Have you ever wondered why, just when you need Him most, God seems hard to find? Maybe you’ve prayed earnestly for direction, provision, or peace, only to feel like your prayers are hitting a ceiling. At these times, it’s easy to feel confused, hurt, or even angry!

If God loves us, why would he hide from us?

The Bible tells us that we certainly are not the first to feel this way! The prophet Isaiah, also felt that God was silent and hidden centuries before Jesus was born.

At that time, Israel was experiencing both hope and confusion. God had promised to rescue them, but He was doing it in an incredibly surprising way – by using a Persian king named Cyrus, who was not even one of God’s people! For many Israelites, this was incredibly hard to understand. God was working through someone they considered an outsider, even an enemy! They couldn’t see clearly what God was doing, and it felt like He had forgotten them.

But what if what they interpreted as God’s silence wasn’t silence at all?

What if it’s like waiting for a text message while God is trying to reach us through email? Perhaps God isn’t hiding Himself from us, but rather working in ways so unexpected that we don’t actually believe or see His hand at work?

The Scripture

“Truly, you are a God who hides himself.”

Breaking Down the Verse

Isaiah wrote this verse at a time when Israel had been beaten down by defeat, exile, and uncertainty. The people had lost their homeland, temple, and (it seemed), their connection to God.

Yet in Isaiah 45, we are told that God was actively at work using King Cyrus of Persia to set His people free.

This was difficult for the people to acknowledge and recognize. Why would the God of Israel work through a foreign king to rescue them? It was shocking! The Israelites expected God to work through their own Jewish leaders or through a dramatic military victory led by their own people. But here they were, being saved through a man who didn’t even acknowledge their God.

Today’s verse acknowledges that even Isaiah saw that God’s methods and timing are rarely predictable. Often God chooses a hidden path that we simply don’t understand.

What does this mean for us?

Sometimes what we interpret as God’s silence and distance might actually be our limited perspective – we’re missing God’s work because it doesn’t match our expectations of how He should act.

The word “hides” or “hidden” here refers not to God being distant but rather to His plans being beyond our immediate comprehension.

This verse reveals a couple of truths about God’s character that are sometimes difficult for us to understand:

  • He often works behind the scenes.
  • He uses unexpected people and methods.
  • His timeline and approach to a problem rarely match our expectations.
  • Often God’s “silence” is often just our own failure to recognize His work because it doesn’t look how we thought it would.

Faith in Action

  • When God seems silent, ask yourself: “Am I looking for God’s answer in only one way? Could He be working in a way I haven’t thought of?” Look beyond your usual expectations of how God should respond.
  • Pay attention to surprising circumstances, unlikely people, or unconventional opportunities. God often shows up in ways and places we least expect.
  • Develop the habit of asking, “God, where are You working in this situation?” rather than “God, why aren’t You working?” The first question opens your eyes to see God’s hidden activity.
  • Instead of feeling frustrated when God works in ways you don’t understand, welcome the mystery as an invitation to know Him more deeply.
  • Remember that God’s work in your life is often like a master artist creating a masterpiece—much of the important work happens in layers that aren’t visible until later stages. Trust the process!

Journaling Prompts

  • Describe a time when you felt God was silent, only to later discover He was working in unexpected ways. What did this teach you about His nature?
  • Read Isaiah 45:1-13 for context. What surprises you about how God chose to work through Cyrus? What does this reveal about God’s methods?
  • What specific expectations do you have about how God should answer your current prayers? How could these expectations potentially blind you to His actual work?
  • Think of a situation where God seems hidden right now. What unexpected people, circumstances, or opportunities could God be using that you haven’t recognized?
  • Write a prayer asking God to help you recognize His work in unexpected places and ways. Be specific about areas where you need fresh vision to see His hidden activity.

Affirmation

My spiritual growth happens as I learn to recognise God’s hand in unexpected people and surprising circumstances.

closing Prayer

Mysterious God,
Thank You that Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts higher than my thoughts. Forgive me for the times I’ve mistaken Your unexpected methods for absence or neglect. Open my eyes to see You working in ways I might have overlooked.
Help me to recognize Your hand even when it doesn’t match my expectations. When I’m tempted to think You’re silent, remind me that You might be speaking through channels I haven’t considered. Give me wisdom to see beyond my limited perspective.
I trust that even when I don’t understand Your methods, You are good, You are present, and You are working all things for good.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
