The Significance Of Jesus’ first miracle
I don’t know about you but the water-into-wine miracle is probably one of the most popular stories we heard about back in Sunday School! I think it’s one of those stories that sticks with you because it is just so interesting and unusual and in the greater context of miracles, it almost seems unnecessary. There’s no doubt that Jesus could have chosen a miragle that was huge and dramatic for His first miracle but instead decided on something seemingly low key. But why?
Today’s Scripture
“Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim… and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.”
John 2:7-9 (NIV)
If you’re not familiar with how the story goes, here’s what happened: Jesus was attending a wedding celebration with His mother and His disciples in a small town called Cana.
Just as the party was getting into full swing, disaster struck – they ran out of wine. In Jesus’ day, hospitality meant everything, so running out of wine was a huge problem, and it could have been very embarrassing for the hosts!
When Mary saw what was happening, she said to Jesus, “They have no more wine.” She didn’t actually ask for anything; she simply made a statement, and it seems she just expected a response.
Jesus’ reply: “Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.”
Notice that Mary doesn’t try to persuade, argue or nag, she simply turns to the servants and says, “Do whatever he tells you.” I love this about Mary! She seems like the type of women people listen to, without questioning!
And so, Jesus tells the servants to fill some large stone jars with water. When they are full, He instructs the servants to pour from the jars and take the wine to the master of the banquet. When the master of the banquet tasted the water turned into wine, he was amazed! It was the best wine he had ever tasted and he praised the bridegroom for saving the very best wine till last!
I love how in this story, Jesus doesn’t make a big announcement or take center stage even though it’s His first miracle. Instea,d He just works quietly behind the scenes.
From the scripture, it seems that the “important” people – the master of the banquet, the guests, and even the bridegroom – enjoyed Jesus’ blessing without even realizing where it had come from. In fact, the scriptures say that only Mary, his disciples and a few humble servants knew about the miracle and God chose them to witness the beginning of Jesus’ mission on earth.
What Does This Mean for Us Today?
If you think about the miracles Jesus did over His lifetime, the water-into-wine miracle hardly seemed like a “necessary” miracle. No one was dying, sick, or desperate. In this particular situation, the worst that would have happened was a bit of embarrassment and a group of disappointed, not-so-drunk wedding goers.
Let’s take a look at why this miracle was important:
God Cares About Ordinary People and Ordinary Joys
This miracle seems to show that God is interested in every part of our lives, not just the emergencies or the crises. If it matters to you, it matters to Him.
Not Just “Enough”
In this story, Jesus doesn’t just provide a little, he provides A LOT! The Bible tells us that the jars could hold 120 – 180 gallons of water, so we can safely assume that is how much wine was made.
Let’s put that into perspective: 120 – 180 gallons (450 – 680 litres) of wine is equal to about 600 and 900 bottles of wine (standard 750ml size) at the wedding in Cana! More than enough wine for hundreds of people and then some!
Jesus Uses The Ordinary
Jesus chooses ordinary every everyday water jars and plain old H2O to perform His first miracle. That’s how God works in us, too.
God’s Timing
This miracle shows us that God’s time is perfect even when we don’t always see it. Sometimes He works behind the scenes in ways we sometimes miss if we are not paying attention.
