Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” This verse beautifully captures the push and pull relationship between our desire for control and God’s sovereign direction.
We all make plans—career goals, family dreams, financial decisions—but how often do they unfold exactly as we imagined?
This proverb reminds us that while planning is wise, holding our plans loosely is wiser. God sees the bigger picture, and His path—even when it diverges from ours—leads to greater purpose.
When our plans fail or take unexpected turns, it’s not a sign of God’s absence but of His care.
He redirects us to protect us, grow us, or align us with His perfect will. The question is: Do we trust Him enough to follow when He changes our course?

Historical Context
Proverbs was written by King Solomon in about the 10th century BC. Known as the wisest man on earth (1 Kings 3:12), Solomon collected practical sayings to teach people how to live with reverence for God.
In ancient Israel, planning was essential—farmers planned harvests, kings planned battles, families arranged marriages. Yet Proverbs repeatedly emphasizes that human wisdom is futile without God’s blessing (Proverbs 19:21, 21:30). This verse would have reminded self-reliant people that God’s sovereignty trumps even the best-laid plans.
Interestingly, the Hebrew word for “establishes” (כּוּן, kun) implies a firm, unmovable foundation. Unlike our shifting strategies, God’s direction is steady and secure.
