You’re not drowning, God Promises To Carry You
I think we’ve all been there… you feel like you’re drowning, not in water but in life itself. Maybe bills are piling up, a relationship is falling apart, or you’ve received bad news from the doctor. In those moments, it can feel like the waves are crashing over your head, and you’re struggling just to breathe.
The prophet Isaiah wrote today’s scripture during a time when God’s people were facing their own storms. The nation of Israel was about to go through a period of captivity and exile. They would be torn from their homes, separated from everything they were familiar with, and forced to live in a foreign land. It was a dark, frightening and uncertain time for them.
But right in the middle of this scary situation, God spoke words of comfort and hope through the prophet Isaiah. These weren’t just nice words to make people feel better for a moment. They were powerful promises from the God who controls the storms and the seas.
The verse we’re looking at today, Isaiah 43:2, comes from a chapter where God is reminding His people of who He is and what He has promised them. It’s a reminder that even when life feels completely out of control, God is still in control. Even when we feel like we’re drowning, God is there to carry us through.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.”
Isaiah 43:2

Breaking Down Today’s Scripture
Let’s look at this verse piece by piece to understand what God is really saying to us.
“When you pass through the waters”
The first thing to notice is that God says “when,” not “if.” God knows that difficult times will come into our lives. He’s not surprised by our problems, and He’s not caught off guard by our struggles. Hard times are part of life in this broken world. Jesus himself told us, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33).
The word “pass through” is important too. It means to go from one side to the other. When you pass through something, you don’t stay there forever. You move through it and come out on the other side. This tells us that our problems are temporary. The storm you’re facing right now will not last forever.
“I will be with you”
This is the heart of God’s promise. He doesn’t promise to take away all our problems or to make life easy. Instead, He promises something even better: His presence. When you’re going through deep waters, you don’t have to go through them alone.
God’s presence isn’t just a nice feeling or a warm thought. It’s a real, powerful reality. The same God who created the universe, who parted the Red Sea, who raised Jesus from the dead is with you in your struggle and He never changes. His presence brings comfort, strength, wisdom, and peace.
“and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you”
Rivers in the Bible often represent powerful, rushing forces that can sweep you away. But God promises that even the strongest currents won’t overwhelm you. The Hebrew word for “overwhelm” means to flood over or to drown. God is saying that no matter how strong the forces against you seem, they will not destroy you.
This doesn’t mean the waters won’t be deep or the current won’t be strong. It means that God’s power is stronger than any force you face. His love is deeper than any problem. His faithfulness is more reliable than any fear.
Faith in Action
So how do we live out this promise in our daily lives? How do we hold onto God’s faithfulness when we’re in the middle of a storm?
1. Remember God’s Track Record
When you’re struggling, take time to remember how God has been faithful in the past. Think about times when He provided for you, protected you, or carried you through difficult situations. Write them down. Tell others about them. Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past gives us confidence in His faithfulness for the future.
2. Focus on God’s Presence, Not the Problem
It’s natural to focus on what’s wrong, but God calls us to focus on what’s right: He is with us. When worry starts to take over, stop and remind yourself: “God is here with me right now.” Practice looking for signs of His presence throughout your day. Maybe it’s a kind word from a friend, a beautiful sunset, or a sense of peace that comes from nowhere.
3. Speak God’s Promises Out Loud
There’s power in speaking God’s promises out loud. When fear whispers, “You won’t make it through this,” speak back with God’s truth: “God is with me, and I will pass through this.” Don’t just think it, say it. Let your own ears hear the truth of God’s promises.
4. Take One Step at a Time
When you’re in deep waters, you don’t have to see the whole path to the other side. You just need to take the next step. God’s presence gives you strength for today. Trust Him for tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Focus on what you can do today, and leave the rest in God’s hands.
5. Reach Out for Support
God often shows His faithfulness through other people. Don’t try to go through your storm alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or church members. Let them pray for you, encourage you, and walk with you through this difficult time.
6. Worship in the Storm
This might seem impossible when you’re struggling, but worship is one of the most powerful ways to experience God’s presence. It doesn’t have to be loud or fancy. It can be as simple as saying, “God, I trust You,” or humming a worship song. Worship shifts our focus from our problems to God’s power.

Prayer for the Day
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your promise to be with me in every storm. When the waters feel deep and the current feels strong, help me remember that You are right there with me.
Give me strength for today and hope for tomorrow. Help me to focus on Your presence instead of my problems. Remind me that this difficult time is temporary, but Your love is forever. Carry me through whatever I’m facing, and help me to trust Your faithfulness even when I can’t see the way forward. Use my story to encourage others who are struggling.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
