You don’t need more talent, just more of the Spirit
I think we all get the feeling that we are just too ordinary to make any type of real difference. Maybe you’ve thought, “If only I were more eloquent, more educated, or more outgoing, then I could really share my faith effectively.” But what if the secret to having an impact isn’t about your natural abilities at all?
When Jesus spoke His final words to His followers before ascending to heaven, He didn’t say, “Go find the most talented people to spread my message” or “Make sure you’re well-trained before you start.” Instead, He promised something far more powerful – the Holy Spirit Himself would empower these ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
The disciples were a diverse group – fishermen, a tax collector, and everyday people without special credentials. Yet Jesus told them they would become His witnesses to the entire world. The key wasn’t their talent but the power they would receive. That same promise extends to us today.
Today’s Scripture
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

Breaking Down the Verse
“You will receive power…”
This isn’t just any kind of power. The Greek word used here is “dunamis”, the same root from which we get words like “dynamite” and “dynamic.” It refers to ability, strength, and might. Jesus wasn’t promising a small boost of confidence but a supernatural enabling that would transform their lives.
This power isn’t something we create through effort or enthusiasm. It’s received as a gift. We don’t have to strive for it, we simply need to be open to receiving it.
“…when the Holy Spirit comes on you…”
The source of this power is crystal clear: the Holy Spirit Himself. Jesus was returning to heaven, but His work would continue through His Spirit empowering His followers.
The Holy Spirit is not just an influence or a force but the third Person of the Trinity, coming to live inside each believer. His presence is the source of our strength and power.
“…and you will be my witnesses…”
Notice the connection: first power, then witness. Jesus doesn’t command, “Go be my witnesses,” but rather promises, “You will be my witnesses.” This isn’t primarily about what we do but who we are.
“…in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
This part outlines an ever-expanding mission that starts locally and goes globally. The disciples were to begin right where they were (Jerusalem), then move to nearby regions (Judea and Samaria), and eventually reach the entire world.
This pattern still applies today. Our witness begins in our immediate surroundings – our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods – and extends outward to places and people we might never have imagined reaching.
Faith in Action
1. Rely on the Spirit’s Power, Not Your Own Abilities
When you feel inadequate, remember that your strength comes from the Holy Spirit, not your eloquence or knowledge. Before conversations about faith, pray for the Spirit’s power to work through you.
2. Be a Witness, Not Just a Messenger
A witness shares personal experience, not just information. People may debate theology, but they can’t argue with how Jesus has changed your life. Practice sharing your story of faith in simple, authentic ways.
3. Start Where You Are
Don’t wait for some far-off mission opportunity. Your “Jerusalem” is right where you are now. Look for ways to demonstrate and share Christ’s love in your everyday interactions.
4. Expand Your Vision
The Spirit empowers us to cross boundaries we might avoid on our own. Ask God to give you a heart for people different from yourself – your “Samaria” – those from different backgrounds, beliefs, or lifestyles.
5. Connect to the Power Source Daily
Just as you charge your phone regularly, spend time daily connecting with God through prayer and His Word. This isn’t about religious duty but maintaining your connection to your power source.

The Holy Spirit’s power is flowing through me today.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the incredible promise of Your Holy Spirit’s power in my life. I admit that I often feel ordinary, inadequate, and unprepared to be Your witness. Today I choose to stop relying on my own abilities and instead open myself to Your power working through me. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Give me courage to share my faith story with others. Help me to speak Your words instead of my own. Show me opportunities to be Your witness right where I am – in my home, my workplace, my neighborhood, and beyond.
Give me Your heart for people who are different from me, those I might naturally avoid or overlook. Expand my vision beyond my comfort zone to see the bigger picture of Your mission in the world.
Thank You that I don’t need special talents or training to make a difference, I just need more of Your Spirit. Use me today, ordinary as I am, to bring someone closer to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
