Faith That Risks Reputation
Have you ever done something brave for someone you love, even if it made you feel embarrassed or left out? Maybe you stood up for a friend or said something everyone else disagreed with. Being brave and having courage can be hard, especially when you worry about what other people will think about you.
This is what happened to Jesus’ friends in the early church. After Jesus went back to heaven, his followers started telling everyone about him.
Some people were happy to hear their message, but some of the leaders, the Sanhedrin, were incredibly angry.
They did not want people talking about Jesus. They told the apostles to stop and even punished them in front of others.
The apostles could have felt ashamed, afraid, or given up. But they didn’t!
Instead, they left feeling happy—yes, happy—because they believed it was an honor to stand up for Jesus, even if it meant losing their good name with other people.
Today’s Scripture
“The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.”
(Acts 5:41)

Breaking Down the Verse
Let’s break down today’s scripture:
- “The apostles left the Sanhedrin…”
The apostles were Jesus’ closest followers. The Sanhedrin was a group of important leaders in charge of religious rules in Jerusalem. Being in trouble with the Sanhedrin was very serious, like standing in court. - “Rejoicing…”
Rejoicing means feeling great joy inside. Most people feel sad or embarrassed when they are punished, but the apostles were happy! - “Because they had been counted worthy…”
They felt special, like they had been chosen for something important. It was like God trusted them to have courage for Him. - “Of suffering disgrace…”
Disgrace often means people looking down on you or laughing at you. The apostles lost the respect of many, but they didn’t care because it was for Jesus. - “For the Name.”
This means for Jesus. They suffered because they loved Jesus and wanted people to know Him.
What This Means
The apostles knew that loving Jesus would sometimes mean people would laugh at them or think badly of them. But they were happy to take that risk!
They cared more about what Jesus thought than about what people thought. They believed that being laughed at, or made fun of, or even punished was a sign that they were doing the right thing for Jesus.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the amazing example in Acts 5:41, where the apostles felt joy after being hurt and embarrassed for following Jesus. When I face hard times or people laugh at me because of my faith, help me remember that this is actually an honor—to be counted worthy of standing up for You.
Instead of feeling sad or afraid when following You gets difficult, please fill me with unexpected joy. Help me care more about what You think than what others think.
Thank You that I can be part of Your story, even when it costs me something. Give me courage to keep going, with a heart full of joy, just like the apostles did.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
