A Story for anyone who longs for a new beginning.
Mary Magdalene is often remembered in snippets – “the woman with the seven demons,” “the first at the tomb,” “a follower of Jesus” – but these fragments barely scratch the surface of who Mary Magdalene really was.
Mary was from Magdala, a prosperous fishing village on the Sea of Galilee. Though some myths and stories persist, there’s no biblical evidence she was a prostitute or a “bad woman.”
Instead, what the Bible does tell us is that she was possessed by seven demons – a number that suggests that her suffering was severe and complete, affecting her mind, emotions, and spirit. I’m not sure if we can truly imagine what she felt like. She was tormented daily, living on the edge, shunned and misunderstood by everyone around her. That was her reality… until Jesus.
The Scripture
“After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another… The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out.”
Luke 8:1-2 (NIV)

Mary Magdalene’s Story
Let’s take some time to think about what Mary had been through. She was possessed by demons. This wasn’t a discrete or secret problem. It was public, humiliating, and deeply wounding. I would imagine that people must have been afraid of her. They probably whispered behind her back or crossed the street to avoid her. I’m sure that many also judged her, probably thinking that she had brought the curse upon herself.
But here’s what we do know: Jesus saw her, healed her and included her. Her healing was so profound that she left everything to follow him – her transformation was real, tangible and complete. In a society were women were often sidelined, she wasn’t just allowed to tag along, she became part of Jesus’ inner circle.
Not only was she a part of Jesus’ inner circle, but she was right there at the cross when nearly everyone else ran away. And on the darkest morning, while others hid in fear, she returned to Jesus’ tomb to tend to His body. And there, in the garden, devastated and weeping, she became the first person to witness the resurrection.
Jesus trusted her – a woman with a shattered past – with the world’s most important news: “Go and tell my brothers: I am alive!“
Faith in Action
So what does Mary Magdalene’s story mean for us today?
- No matter what “labels” or heavy regrets you carry, Jesus offers you a new name, a new purpose, and a new future. You are not your mistakes.
- Mary teaches us about showing up, even when things are dark, confusing, or costly. Don’t give up on God (or people) just because the path is hard.
- Once Mary was set free, she poured herself out – her time, resources, and energy – for God and others. Has God healed you in some way? How can you use your freedom to help someone else?
- In a world that often discounts the stories and voices of women (or anyone seen as “less than”), Jesus chose Mary for a world-changing mission. God loves to use the overlooked and misunderstood for extraordinary things!
- Like Mary, you don’t have to have all the answers; you only need to carry the message: “I have seen the Lord!” Your story of hope, freedom, or forgiveness can change someone else’s life.
Reflection Questions
- When have you felt most misunderstood or defined by your past? What changed for you when you experienced God’s grace?
- Why do you think Mary was so loyal to Jesus after her healing? What does it look like for you to “show up” for God, even when it’s difficult?
- Are there “labels” you carry, either from others or yourself, that God wants to replace with His truth about your identity?
- In what ways can you use your own story of healing, grace, or hope to encourage others, just as Mary did?
- What does it mean to you that Jesus entrusted such important news to Mary, not to a religious leader or one of the twelve disciples?
Affirmation
I am not defined by my past – I am loved, chosen, and called by Jesus for a new purpose.
Prayer for the Day
Lord Jesus,
Thank you for the story of Mary Magdalene – for her courage, loyalty, and the freedom you gave her. Thank you for seeing beyond her past and calling her into a life of hope, healing, and purpose. Help me remember that your love is stronger than my worst regrets or the labels others have put on me. When I feel stuck in shame or the weight of my history, remind me that you offer full forgiveness and a new beginning.
Give me the courage to be loyal to you, even when faith is lonely or hard. Use my story to bring hope and encouragement to someone else who needs to know they’re not too far gone for your redemption. Thank you for calling unlikely people for your greatest purposes.
Amen.
