Prioritizing God’s Kingdom brings peace and provision.
Imagine Jesus on a hillside with a crowd all around him listening intently as He delivers what we now call the Sermon on the Mount. These people were ordinary, every day people – laborers, fishermen, farmers, parents – many of them living just a few steps from poverty, often dependent on each day’s catch or crop. Anxiety about everyday needs such as food, drink, and clothing, was very real to them.
Our lives aren’t so different in many ways. Many of us lie awake at night worrying about how our needs will be met or what tomorrow might bring. It’s easy for these worries about life’s necessities can easily take centre stage in our hearts.
Yet during His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminds us that there is a better way. He asks us to trade our worries for trust, promising that our heavenly Father knows exactly what we need and is faithful to provide.
The Scripture
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:31–33 (ESV)

Breakdown of the Verse
Let’s walk through these three verses step by step:
“Therefore do not worry…”
Jesus isn’t being dismissive or naïve about what we think about. He recognizes that humans tend to fret about the essentials of life. But he doesn’t want our lives to be ruled by worries and anxious thoughts.
“What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?”
Jesus knows exactly the types of worries or concerns we have – those fears that can gnaw away at our peace little by little.
“The Gentiles seek all these things…”
“Gentiles” refers to people outside of God’s covenant, those who naturally chase after material security because they don’t know God as Father, Provider, and Protector.
“Your heavenly Father knows that you need them…”
What a profound reassurance! Our needs are not hidden from God. He is not distant or indifferent. He knows. He cares.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…”
“Seek” is an active word – Jesus instructs us to pursue, prioritize, and choose what matters most (a similar idea is found in the story of Mary and Martha). He doesn’t want you to simply fit Him in when it’s convenient.
“Kingdom of God” refers to God’s rule and reign as Lord over everything. He wants us to live according to His ways, submitting to His leadership and building our lives around His purposes.
“And His Righteousness” asks us to reflect His character in our actions, choices, and relationships – embracing what is good, just, and pleasing to Him.
“And all these things will be given to you as well.”
This isn’t a blank check for any and every desire we might have. It’s God’s promise to supply what we genuinely need, as we prioritize Him.
Our role: Seek. God’s role: Provide.
Faith in Action
- Reframe Your Priorities
Instead of making anxiety your starting point each morning, make seeking God’s direction your first step. - Trust God, Act in Faith
Faith isn’t passive. Budget wisely, work diligently, care for your responsibilities, but do so from a place of trust, not panic or anxiety. - Release Control
Take every worry you have to God in prayer. List them out, then surrender them to Him, asking for guidance and peace, not just solutions. - Focus on today
Don’t let tomorrow’s unknowns and worries steal today’s opportunities for gratitude, service, and joy. - Remember God’s Provision Stories
Keep a journal and write about all the times God has provided, and revisit those as reminders when anxiety starts creeping in. Don’t just write down the small things, but include even the small, insignificant things like a kind word, an unexpected solution, or even simply just peace in your heart. Over time, these journals will become powerful reminders of God’s faithfulness. - A Simple Breath Prayer
Whenever anxious thoughts try to creep in, whisper: “Father, I trust You to provide.” Let this prayer become your gentle interruption to worry.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father
Thank You for knowing my needs before I say a word. Teach me to trust You more deeply and to seek Your kingdom first in every area of my life. When worries rise, remind me of Your faithfulness. Give me eyes to see opportunities to live out Your righteousness and a heart willing to let go of anxious striving. Today, I rest in the assurance that when I put You first, You provide exactly what I need, sometimes in unexpected ways. Thank You for being my loving, attentive Father.
Amen.
