Why Listening Matters (Proverbs 12:15)

Listening vs. Stubbornness: Insights from Proverbs for Everyday Choices.

Have you ever thought you were definitely right about something, only to find out later that you’d completely missed the mark? Maybe you jumped into a new project, offered a strong opinion in a conversation, or made a big decision based on what you thought was best, but then things didn’t quite work out. If you’ve been there, you’re not alone!

Proverbs, written by King Solomon, who is famously known for his wisdom, is God’s down-to-earth instruction manual for living well. Solomon understood that being humble and acknowledging that you don’t know everything is at the heart of true wisdom. Proverbs 12:15 is one of those verses that pulls no punches and points out the danger of “going with your gut” without checking your direction. It highlights the humble, powerful choice of listening.

The Scripture

“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

Breakdown of the Verse

This proverb packs a big truth into a simple sentence:

  • “The way of fools seems right to them…” Fools are stubborn, not just lacking information, but sure that they’re already right. There’s a kind of blindness here: an inability to even see the possibility of a better perspective.
  • “…but the wise listen to advice.” Wise people know they don’t have all the answers. Instead of being threatened by other opinions, they invite them. They actively seek input, absorb what others have learned, and aren’t afraid to adjust course.

Wise people show strength by listening, learning, and considering other viewpoints. Fools? They just double down on their own way, even as things unravel.

When we stop listening, we close ourselves off to learning and growth. But when we regularly practice listening, truly hearing not just the words but the heart behind the advice, we step into a posture where God can teach and guide us.

Faith in Action: Open Ears, Open Heart

How does this ancient wisdom look in practice every day?

  • Check your pride: Be honest – do you find it hard to accept feedback or correction, even from those who love you?
  • Practice active listening: When a godly friend offers advice, don’t just wait your turn to talk. Really listen and absorb what they’re saying.
  • Pause before reacting: Don’t dismiss advice just because it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes the hardest feedback is the most helpful.
  • Try to understand: Ask good questions. Clarify what was meant. Invite deeper conversation.
  • Pray for a teachable heart: Ask God to help you welcome insights, especially when your first instinct is to push back.
  • Thank those who advise you: Make it a point to show appreciation to people who care enough to speak into your life, even when it’s tough.

Being wise isn’t about always having the right answer; it’s about always being willing to learn.

Reflection Questions

Affirmation

I choose humility over pride. I am willing to listen, to learn, and to grow.

Closing Prayer

Father God,
Sometimes it’s easier to go my own way or to think I have it all figured out. Help me to recognize the foolishness in that thinking. Give me a humble, teachable spirit. Surround me with people whose words are rooted in Your wisdom and love, and help me truly listen, even when it’s uncomfortable. Show me the areas where I need to grow and give me the courage to change. Thank You for loving me enough to guide me through others. Please also help me to be a blessing and a source of wisdom to those I meet.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
