What is the HEAR Bible Study Method, Anyway?
You might be wondering, what is the HEAR method of bible study? In a nutshell, it’s a four-step guide to help you move from just reading words to actually absorbing their meaning. The HEAR bible study acronym breaks down like this:
H.E.A.R
- H = Highlight
- E = Explain
- A = Apply
- R = Respond
The beauty of the H.E.A.R Bible study method is its structure. It gives you a clear path to follow every single time you open your Bible, so it’s perfect for beginners or anyone who feels a bit lost.
It pairs especially well with:
- Bible journaling
- Verse-of-the-day readings
- Online Bible reading plans
- Devotionals
Your Step-by-Step Guide to the HEAR Method
Let’s walk through each part of the HEAR Bible reading method. You can use a notebook, a notes app, or you can download and use our free HEAR Bible study template down below.
H: HIGHLIGHT a Key Verse
Don’t try to tackle a whole chapter at once. Read a small passage, and pay attention to what stands out to you. This could be something like a verse that challenges you or something that talks to your current situation.
You’re not choosing a traditionally popular verse, just the one that catches your attention and stands out to you. Write that verse down word-for-word. Slowing down to physically write the verse down helps you to see details you might skip over otherwise.
E: EXPLAIN It In Your Own Words
Now, rewrite the verse’s main idea as if you were explaining it to a friend. What’s the plain, simple meaning? Don’t stress about being perfect.
- If you’re stuck, ask yourself questions like: “Who is speaking? Who is this verse talking to? What is being said? Why was it said?”
A: APPLY It to Your Life
This is the most powerful step. Ask yourself: “How does this verse touch my life right now?” Be specific. Does it challenge a habit? Give you comfort? Give you a command to follow? Think about how it can apply to your thoughts, your actions, your relationships, or your worries.
R: RESPOND with Prayer or Action
Finally, decide what you’re going to do with what you’ve learned from the verse.
Write a short, honest prayer. Or, jot down one tangible action you’ll take today because of what you read. This turns insight into a real-life step.
A Full HEAR Bible Study Method Example
Let’s make this concrete with a real scripture. We’ll use Philippians 4:6-7 as our example.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Here’s how a HEAR Bible study example journal entry might look:
H: HIGHLIGHT
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
E: EXPLAIN
God is telling me not to let worry and anxiety take over my life. Instead, for anything that stresses me out, I should talk to Him about it. He specifically tells me to come to Him in every situation. I need to go to Him with anything and everything, and when I do, I must remember to say thank you for all the good things in my life.
A: APPLY
I’ve been constantly anxious about a big work project. I lie awake at night going over “what-ifs,” and it’s starting to affect my sleep and ability to concentrate during the day. This verse is a direct command to stop that cycle and actively choose to pray instead of worry. I must learn to bring this specific project to God every time I feel my anxiety rising.
R: RESPOND
“Heavenly Father, I choose to hand over this work project to you right now. I thank you for the job I have and the skills you’ve given me. Help me to do my best and then trust you with the outcome. Please guard my mind with your peace today.”
See how that works? The HEAR method of Bible study takes a general promise and makes it personal and actionable for everyday life.
