Create a beautiful, textured tassel for your Bible with fabric scraps, beads, and meaningful charms.

I first spotted Bible tassel bookmarks on TikTok and loved them immediately! They’re not your average bookmark – they’re more like a tiny piece of art that hangs from your Bible, adding softness, texture, and so much personality.

This Bible tassels DIY tutorial will show you exactly how to make Bible tassels. Beyond just making bookmarks for yourself, this idea also makes a wonderful bible study craft for women to make for themselves or as gifts for friends and family.

Bible Tassels Supplies List

The beauty of this project is that it’s perfect for using up fabric scraps or any odd crafting supplies you have at home. Here’s what you will need:

How To Make Bible Tassels: Step-by-Step Instructions

(Video Tutorial Below)

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric and Strands

Gather your fabric scraps. Depending on what you want to create, you can use a variety of textures, lengths, and widths. Don’t overthink it – the beauty is in the layers.

  • Cut or tear fabric into strips roughly 6-8 inches long.
  • For lace and delicate fabrics, you can leave edges raw. For cotton, you might want to fray the edges slightly for a softer look.

Step 2: Prepare The Base Thread

You’ll need a biggish flat surface to work on.

  • Cut a piece of twine, ribbon, or cord about 40 inches long – this is the actual bookmark part of the tassel bookmark.
  • Lay it flat and mark the middle point.

Step 2: Arrange The Tassel Trims

  • At the mid-point of your base thread, arrange and lay out your trims (fabric, lace, ribbon, etc.).
  • You can make your tassel thicker or thinner depending on how many trims you use.

Step 4: Secure The Tassel

Take both ends of your base thread and tie a couple of knots around the trims to hold them in place – make sure that the knots are tight so that the trim can’t fall out.

Step 5: Add Beads To The Top Of The Tassel

  • Thread a large bead onto the base thread, followed by a small bead or spacer.
  • Push these beads right down to the edge of the tassel.
  • Secure these with a couple of knots so that the beads don’t slide.

Step 6: Add Beads Or Charms At The Bottom

  • Measure a gap down the thread (this will be the bookmark length).
  • Tie a double knot where you want the bottom bead or charm to sit.
  • Add the bead or charm and secure it with another knot.

Step 7: Finish The Tassel

  • Add any charms, beads, or other decorations to the strips of fabric.
  • Fluff out the ends of the trims to give the tassel volume.
  • Trim any uneven edges if needed.

Troubleshooting & Tips

Q: I’m not artistic, and my tassel looks messy. Help!
A: Try using fewer elements at first. Sometimes “messy” looks intentional, and sometimes it just looks messy. Try layering two or three textures or patterns instead of a whole bunch.

Q: How do I keep my tassel from falling apart?
A: Make sure you tie it well, and if needs be, a little glue on the knot can give you peace of mind.

Q: Can I make this with kids?
A: For older kids and teens, yes! It’s a wonderful vacation bible school ribbon craft activity.
