Easter Monday: A New Beginning (John 21:12)

Easter Monday can sometimes feel like the morning after a celebration – the confetti has settled, the hymns have faded and we’re left with a round question: What now?

The disciples faced the same reality. After the shock and grief of Jesus’ crucifixion and the utimate joy of His resurrection, they didn’t know what to do with themselves.

In John 21, we are told that Peter simply said, “I am going fishing.”

And so off they went! In the verses that follow we are told that they didn’t catch anything that night.

Early the next morning, Jesus stood on the shore where they were fishing but they did not recognize him. He called to them to ask if they had caught anything. “No” they said. He told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat and they would catch some.

Sound familiar?

In Luke 5:1-11 Jesus instructed the disciples to do exactly the same thing when he originally called them to follow Him and just like before, they followed His command. Once again they caught so many fish that they struggled to pull them in. This was when they recognised Jesus!

Peter was so excited he put on his clothes (because they evidently weren’t dressed when they fished!), jumped into the sea and swam to Jesus.

By the time the others reached the shore with their catch Jesus had already prepared a fire and was cooking them breakfast.

Let that sink in… The Lord of all creation was cooking breakfast for His friends 🙂

What a beautiful moment.

Devotional Reflection

While we celebrate the resurrection on Easter Sunday, Easter Monday reminds us of something just as beautiful – Jesus is still with us in the every day, ordinary moments of life.

When he came to his disciples, He didn’t make a grand or over the top entrance, he simply spoke to them saying, “Come and have breakfast.” It was peaceful. Familiar. And deeply loving.

What This Breakfast Teaches Us

Jesus Comes When We Least Expect It

The disciples were back in their normal routine, probably unsure of what to do next. Jesus met them right there in that moment—not in a temple, not in a big crowd, but by the sea. He still meets us where we are.

He Cares About Our Needs

They were tired and hungry so Jesus made breakfast. He didn’t preach first—He served them. He knew what they needed and showed them His love in a simple way.

He Brings Abundance

They had caught nothing all night. Then, at His word, they had more than enough! When we listen to Jesus, He gives us everything we need—even when we feel empty.

He Invites Us to Join Him

“Come and have breakfast.” This was more than just a simple meal—it was a moment of deep and personal connection with His friends. Jesus wanted to be with them and He still wants to be with us today!

Faith in Action

  • Notice Jesus Today: Look for Him in small things—in quiet moments, kind gestures, or answered prayers.
  • Listen to His Voice: Like the disciples, follow where he leads. Even if it seems simple, it can lead to a big blessing.
  • Spend Time with Him: Sit down, pray, and share your heart. Jesus still invites you to “come and eat.”

Journaling Prompts

  • Write about a time in your life when it felt like you were working hard but catching nothing.
  • Think about the last week and make a list of all the places Jesus was with you in ordinary ways.
  • How can you create more time in your routine to spend time with him?
  • In what ways has Jesus provided for you, even when you didn’t see it at first?
  • What would you say to Jesus if you sat by the fire eating breakfast with Him today?

Daily Affirmation

Jesus is with me in every moment. I receive His love, I trust His voice, and I rest in His care.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for meeting me not only in church, but in the everyday places of my life. You care about my needs, my work, and my heart. Help me to see You clearly, to hear Your voice, and to accept Your invitation to come close. I don’t want to miss these beautiful moments with You. Thank You for Your love and quiet presence.
Amen.
