New Years eve devotional and prayer

New Year’s Eve Devotional: Letting Go of the Past (Philippians 3:13-14)

Step into God’s future with hope and purpose.

The end of the year is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and look back at the year that has passed. We remember the highs and the lows, the goals we reached and the ones that slipped away. It’s so easy to become distracted by what didn’t happen or the mistakes we made, but I believe that God doesn’t want us to be burdened by the past but rather excited for the future!

The Scripture

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Take some time to really reflect on this Scripture. It was written by the apostle Paul. He had a life of religious pride and violence that could have permanently crippled him if he had allowed it to. But instead of drowning in shame and guilt, he intentionally chose to “forget” by not letting his past define who he was. Instead, he strained forward with hope, his eyes fixed on the calling God had for him.

Maybe this New Year’s Eve, that’s exactly what you also need to do. God isn’t asking you to ignore any problems or regrets you might have, but He is asking you to release them to Him. You don’t have to carry them into a new year alone.

A New Year’s Eve Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come to You as this year ends, thankful for Your constant faithfulness through every season.
Thank You for the grace that covered my mistakes and the strength that carried me through hard days.
Tonight, I choose to follow Your command through Paul.
With Your help, I release the past – the regrets, the disappointments, the things I wish I had done differently. I lay them at Your feet and receive Your forgiveness and peace.
I fix my eyes not on what is behind, but on what is ahead – the future You have prepared for me.
Fill me with a fresh sense of hope and anticipation for the new thing You are about to do! I press on toward the goal, toward the calling You have on my life, empowered by Your Spirit.
Thank You that my past does not define my future; Your grace does.
I step toward tomorrow with hope, trusting in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
