How To Get Started!

Here are a few tips on how parents can encourage kids to start journaling using some of these kids’ journaling prompts.

Make it a special experience

  • Choose a cool journal: Let your kids pick out a journal that they love, with a fun cover or colorful pages. This will make them excited to start writing.
  • Create a cozy writing nook: Set up a comfortable and quiet space for your child to write, with good lighting and minimal distractions.
  • Accessories: Provide extra special writing tools, such as colored pencils, markers, stickers, and anything else that will make journaling fun for them.

Introduce journaling in a playful way

  • Start with a game: Begin with a fun journaling game, like “Would You Rather” or “Two Truths and a Lie.” This will help your child get comfortable with writing and thinking creatively.
  • Use prompts with a twist: Instead of traditional prompts, try using ones that incorporate games, like “Draw a picture of your favorite animal and write a short story about it” or “Write a poem using only words that start with the letter ‘S’.”
  • Favorite Topics: Encourage your kids to write about their favorite topics, whether it’s dinosaurs, princesses, or superheroes.

Make it a routine

  • Establish a regular journaling time: Encourage your kids to journal at the same time every day, like before bed or after breakfast, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.
  • Be a journaling buddy: Write in your own journal alongside your child. This will show them that journaling is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy.

Use engaging journaling prompts

  • Ask open-ended questions: Use prompts that encourage your child to think deeply and express themselves, like “What’s the best thing that happened to you this week?” or “What’s something you’re looking forward to doing this summer?”
  • Use visual prompts: Incorporate images, like a picture of a fantastical creature or a scenic landscape, and ask your child to write a story inspired by the image.
  • Encourage gratitude: Ask your child to write about three things they’re grateful for each day. This helps develop a positive mindset and appreciation for life’s small joys.
  • Experiment: Encourage them to experiment with different writing styles, such as poetry, scriptwriting, or even writing from different perspectives.

Remember

  • Be patient and encouraging: Don’t worry too much about spelling or grammar. Focus on encouraging your kids to express themselves and have fun.
  • Respect their privacy: Let your kids know that their journal is their own and that you won’t read it without their permission.

That’s It!
