Getting to Know God’s Character
Have you ever wondered what God is really like? What His values and traits are? Or, how He feels about you?
These are all great questions to explore in your journal!
Some of God’s characteristics include that he is loving, merciful, and gracious always blessing and caring for His children. He is faithful, trustworthy, just, righteous, and holy. He is also omnipotent, all-powerful, wise, patient, and kind and the Bible tells us that He loves us deeply.
Journal Prompts
Here are some journaling prompts to help explore God’s character:
- Create a list of some of God’s attributes that you’re most grateful for. How have you seen those characteristics play out in your life?
- How can you apply God’s love and mercy to your relationships with others? What would that look like in your daily life?
- What are some ways that you can trust in God’s sovereignty, even when things don’t make sense? How can you surrender to His will and trust that He’s got everything under control?
Tip! Try to find Bible verses that correspond with each attribute that you uncover.
I think one of my favorite Bible verses says it all:
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. – 1 John 4:8
I love this verse because it reminds us that everything that God does is motivated by His love for us which is a pretty amazing concept to wrap your head around!

Learning from Biblical Women
I don’t know about you, but I’m fascinated by all the amazing women of the Bible!
These women were living in a completely different time and culture, and yet, their stories are still relevant to us today.
From Ruth to Esther to Mary, these women are amazing examples of faith, courage, and perseverance that we should all aspire to – women who embody the Proverbs 31 woman perfectly!
She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future – Proverbs 31:25
Journal Prompts
Use the following journaling prompts to help you explore this amazing topic:
- Which biblical woman is your favorite, and why? What can you learn from her story and apply to your own life?
- How can you apply the principles of Proverbs 31 to your own life? What would that look like in your daily relationships and responsibilities?
- What are some ways that you can trust in God’s plan for your life, even when things don’t make sense? How can you surrender to His will and trust that He’s got everything under control?
- Read the story of Deborah (Judges 4-5). What can you learn from her courage, wisdom, and leadership? How can you apply this to your own life when you are faced with challenges or opportunities to lead?
- Reflect on the life of Ruth (Ruth 1-4). What can you learn from her faithfulness, loyalty, and determination? How did her relationship with Naomi and Boaz impact her life and the decisions she made? What can you learn from her story?
- Think about Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1-2). What can you learn from her quiet humility, obedience, and trust in God’s plan and how can you apply this to your own life when your future is uncertain?

Mighty Men of Faith
Some of the greatest men in the Bible were strong men of faith who brim over with courage, conviction, and an unshakable devotion to God!
Men such as David, Samson, Joshua, Paul, and Peter were not perfect but they were willing to trust and obey God, even in the face of overwhelming challenges and death.
Their stories are so encouraging and inspiring and they challenge us to deepen our own faith and trust in God’s power and provision.
Journal Prompts
Here are a few journaling prompts to help you dig deeper:
- Which man of faith is your favorite, and why? Write about his story and take special note of the challenges he faced and how his life glorified God.
- What are some characteristics of these strong men of faith that you admire and aspire to? How can you cultivate and nurture these qualities in your own life?
- Just like the men of faith in the bible, how can you apply the principles of faith, hope, trust, and obedience to your own life?
- Read the story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17). What can you learn from David’s trust in God and his willingness to face his fears head-on?
- Study the life of Samson (Judges 13-16). What were some of his strengths and weaknesses? How did his choices and decisions impact his life?
- Read the story of Joshua, who led the Israelites into the Promised Land (Joshua 1-12). What can you learn from his courage and trust in God’s promises? How can you apply similar trust and courage when faced with uncertainty or doubt?
One of the things that I really love about the stories of the amazing men and women of the Bible is that they remind us that true strength and courage do not come from human ability but rather from a reliance on God.
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go – Joshua 1:9

The Parables and Teachings of Jesus
In the Bible, Jesus uses stories and examples (parables) to teach us about God’s love and the importance of living a good life.
Parables like the story of the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan were used by Jesus to help us understand more complex spiritual truths.
Journal Prompts
Here are some journal prompts to help you explore this topic:
- Which parable or teaching of Jesus is your favorite, and why?
- Read the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). What does this story teach you about God’s amazing love and forgiveness? Think about not only the prodigal son, but also his faithful older brother. Which son are you?
- Think about Jesus’ teachings on the kingdom of God (Matthew 13:31-33, Mark 4:30-32, Luke 13:18-21 – The parable of the Mustard Seed). What do these teachings tell you about God’s plan for the world? How do these teachings apply to your own life?
- Study the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). What does this story teach you about the importance of helping others? Explore the relationship between the man who was attacked and the Samaritan man who helped him. What does this teach us about being kind, caring, and compassionate towards people who are different from us?
Here are a few parables that you can study:
- The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): A story about a father’s love and forgiveness for his sinful son.
- The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37): A parable about showing compassion and kindness to those in need, regardless of their background or circumstances.
- The Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:12-14, Luke 15:4-7): A parable about God’s love and concern for anyone who is lost.
- The Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35): A story about the importance of forgiveness and mercy, and the consequences of not showing them to others.
- The Sower (Matthew 13:3-9, Mark 4:3-9, Luke 8:5-8): A story about a farmer who sows his seeds on different types of soil teaching us about the importance of having receptive and open hearts and minds.
- The Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21): A parable about the dangers of greed and materialism, and the importance of prioritizing spiritual wealth.
- The Laborers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16): A story about the generosity and fairness of God, teaching that those who come to Him at any point in their lives will receive the same reward as those who have been faithful from the beginning.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock – Matthew 7:24

The Fruit of the Spirit
As followers of Jesus, we are called to live a life that is a reflection of the character of God.
The Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) are the qualities that God wants to produce in our lives. These are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Journal Prompts
Here are a few journaling prompts to help you explore the Fruit of the Spirit:
- Which of the Fruit of the Spirit do you struggle with the most, and why?
- Which Fruit of the Spirit do you think is lacking in your life? What steps can you take to start growing in that area?
- Read Galatians 5:22-23 and reflect on what each of the Fruit of the Spirit means to you. How do you see these qualities demonstrated in the life of Jesus?
- Think about a time when you experienced love, joy, or peace in a profound way. What were you doing at that time? How can you recreate those moments in your life?

Spiritual Disciplines
Spiritual disciplines are habits that help us to connect with God in a meaningful way, allowing us to grow in our faith and trust.
They are like exercises that help us build our spiritual muscles. And just like athletes practice their sport, we can practice spiritual disciplines to get closer to God.
Some spiritual disciplines include:
- Prayer: Talking to God and listening to Him. We can pray about anything, from our daily struggles to our deepest desires.
- Bible Reading: Reading the Bible to learn more about God and His love for us. We can read it on our own, with a friend, or in a group.
- Fasting: Giving up something we enjoy, like food or social media, to focus on God. This helps us remember that God is more important than anything else.
- Service: Helping others, like volunteering or serving in our community. This shows God’s love for those around us.
- Worship: Singing, playing music, or creating art to express our love for God. We can worship alone or with others.
- Journaling: Writing down our thoughts, feelings, and prayers to reflect on our journey with God.
- Meditation: Taking time to quiet our minds and focus on God’s presence. We can meditate on a Bible verse, a prayer, or simply on God’s love.
Journal Prompts
Here are some journal prompts to help you get started with practicing spiritual disciplines:
- What spiritual discipline do you want to start practicing? Why is it important to you?
- What are some ways you can make prayer a regular part of your day?
- How can you use Bible reading to learn more about God and His love for you?
- What are some things you can give up for a day or a week to focus on God?
- How can you serve others in your community?
- What are some ways you can express your love for God through worship?
Practicing spiritual disciplines is not about earning God’s love or approval. It’s about deepening our relationship with Him and becoming more like Jesus.
As we make time for each of these disciplines, we’ll grow closer to God and become more like the person He created us to be.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will – Romans 12:2

Biblical Values

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you – Ephesians 4:32

Overcoming Sin and Struggles
We know that we aren’t perfect and that we will each face many different struggles and temptations.
Sins like lying, cheating, pride, jealousy, and anger separate us from God and can hurt others.
Struggles like anxiety, depression, or feelings of being overwhelmed can also be really tough to deal with.
The good news is that God is always with us and wants to help us overcome them. Here are a few ways that we can do this:
- Talk to God – Talk to God about anything that is going on in your life and ask for His help and comfort.
- Focus on God’s promises: Create a collection of Bible verses that highlight God’s promises to you.
- Confess and repent – Acknowledge when you have sinned and turn away from it.
- Ask for forgiveness – Ask God and anyone you have hurt to forgive you.
- Ask for help – Ask God to help and strengthen you. Find someone you trust who can support you while you work through struggles.
- Practice self-control – Learn to make good choices and avoid people or situations that might lead you to sin.
Remember that God loves you completely and will never leave you to handle anything on your own!
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age – Matthew 28:20

Journal Prompts
Here are some journal prompts to help you think about overcoming sin and struggles:
- What are some sins you are struggling with right now? How can you confess and repent of them?
- Think of someone you have hurt or wronged. How can you ask them for forgiveness?
- How can you surround yourself with positive influences and practice self-control?
- What are some struggles you’re facing right now? Write a letter to God letting him know how you feel and ask for his help. Is there someone in your life you can ask for help?
Remember, overcoming sin and struggles is a process, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time. God is always with us, and He wants to help us become more like Jesus.
And don’t forget to reach out to people you trust to help you and support you as you work towards overcoming your struggles.
Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

End Times and Eternity
As Christians, we know that our time here on earth is limited and that there is so much more to live than what we can see and experience right now!
The Bible teaches us about end times and eternity and what we can expect.
Use your journal to reflect on the return of Jesus, the resurrection, God’s final judgment, and the new heaven and new earth.
There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away – Revelation 21:4

Seasons and Holidays
I don’t know about you but holidays and the changing seasons always have a way of helping me to remember and reflect on my relationship with God.

Prayer and Intercession
Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to connect with God as a Christian.
When we pray we get to talk to God about our thoughts, feelings, and the things we need. We also get to thank him and praise him for everything he does for us!
Intercession is a special type of prayer where we pray on behalf of others asking God to intervene in their lives and bring about positive change.

Using Your Journal to Enhance Your Prayer Life
Your journal is a really powerful tool to help you in your prayer life. Writing down and reflecting on your prayers can help you clarify your thoughts, keep track of your prayer requests, and keep consistent.
Going back and reviewing your journal entries can also help you reflect on God’s faithfulness and answered prayers which will allow you to grow your faith and trust.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6
