Step 1: Choose the Perfect Spot For Your Meditation Corner

Choosing the right space for your meditation corner is probably one of the most important decisions you will have to make. You want to choose a spot that is quiet, peaceful, and free from any distractions.

Here are things to consider:

  • Quiet and private: As mentioned you need to choose a space that is away from noisy rooms or the busy areas of your home.
  • Size: Don’t worry too much about the size of the space, even a small corner can be used to create the perfect meditation corner.
  • Natural light: Natural light and sunshine have a way of lifting our spirits and making us feel good so choosing a spot with natural light can be beneficial (check out some sunroom ideas here). But don’t worry if you can’t find a spot with natural light, you can always use candles or soft lighting to create a peaceful ambiance.
  • Ventilation: If you can, choose a spot near a window or door so that you have plenty of fresh air while meditating.

Some popular meditation corner spaces include:

  • A quiet corner in your bedroom
  • A peaceful spot in your backyard or garden
  • A cozy nook in your living room
  • A dedicated meditation room (if you’re lucky enough to have the space!)

Step 2: Minimize Clutter and Distractions

Once you have found a suitable meditation space, it’s time to remove anything that might be distracting or intrusive. Keep it simple and remove anything that’s not going to add to your meditative practice.

You can consider including a small table, basket, or shelf to store or display anything that you need or like such as candles, your journal, plants, etc.

Step 3: Design Your Meditation Nook

Make your meditation nook your own by adding your personality to the space. Think about the things that help you to relax and make you feel good and add these to your corner.

Color

Color can affect our feelings and emotions in a big way so it is important to choose colors that are calming and that resonate with you.

Generally, it’s a good idea to stick to a soothing color palette that promotes relaxation. You could consider soft blues and whites, pale greens and beiges, or even neutral colors like taupe or gray.

That said, I’ve seen some gorgeous boho meditation nooks that use strongly contrasting colors that are everything but neutral!

Textures

Depending on how you feel you could add lots of soft and comfy cushions and pillows to your meditation spot along with cozy throw blankets.

If you prefer a more natural and earthy look and feel then you could add natural fiber rugs made from jute or sisal along with woven baskets where you can store any meditation accessories you have like cushions, blankets, or even journals and stationery. You can also add wooden items to the corner like a wooden meditation bench to add a sense of warmth.

If you like you can also add natural elements like stones, crystals, shells, etc to your design.

Comfortable seating

You need to be completely comfortable when sitting and meditating so it is important to choose something where you can sit for longer periods without feeling distracted or uncomfortable.

If you have the budget for it then you could choose a specialized meditation bench or chair that gives you good support for your back and legs. Make sure that the bench or chair is a good height for you and that you are comfortable.

If you are just starting out or don’t want to invest in something specific, you can always use a thick floor cushion or pillow. You really don’t need anything too fancy. As long as you are comfortable, you are good to go!

Soft Lighting

If you don’t have a lot of natural light (or you prefer a softer ambiance) then you can use soft lighting to create your peaceful meditation spot. You can use candles, string lights, or a dimmer switch to adjust the lighting to your liking.

Plants

Depending on how much light you have you could add plants to your meditation nook. And if you aren’t a plant person maybe consider using low-maintenance plants like succulents or cacti.

If you have a spot with good natural lighting or even sunshine, you could choose meditation-friendly plants like lavender, chamomile, or valerian whose natural fragrances are known to promote calm and relaxation.

If you are working with a teeny tiny meditation nook then you could try hanging plants like ferns or ivy or even miniature plants like mini succulents or tiny cacti to add a touch of charm and whimsy to your meditation corner.

Aromatherapy Or Incense

Use aromatherapy or incense to add to the ambiance of your meditation corner. Choose scents that make you feel good, are uplifting, and help you to relax.

Step 4: Minimize Distractions and Create a Peaceful Ambiance

If you are anything like me then sometimes it can be difficult to stay focused! Here are a few ways that you can stay on track and reduce distractions:

  • Reduce noise pollution: If you live somewhere that has a lot of noise pollution then you could use earplugs, white noise machines, or sound-absorbing materials to drown out unwanted sounds.
  • Use a meditation app: Consider using a meditation app or guided meditation to help you stay focused and on track.
  • Create a peaceful ambiance: Use calming music, nature sounds, or silence to create a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Turn off notifications: Turn off the notifications on your phone or put it on silent mode so that it doesn’t disturb you.

Step 5: Add Personal Touches and Meaningful Objects to Your Meditation Corner

Unless you are going for a very minimalist meditation space, you could consider adding personal touches and meaningful objects to it to make it feel more inviting and special.

Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

  • Personal mementos: Display personal items like photos, jewelry, or any sentimental objects that have a special meaning to you and bring you joy.
  • Vision board: Include your vision board in your design so that you can stay focused on your goals and plans for the future.
  • Inspirational quotes: You could display inspirational quotes or passages that motivate and inspire you.
  • Sacred texts: Display sacred texts or spiritual writings that inspire and guide you in your meditation practice.
  • Nature elements: Bring the outdoors in by adding natural elements like a vase with fresh flowers, a bowl of river rocks, plants, or even crystals and gemstones.

Bonus Tips

A great way to stick with your meditation practice is to create a ritual or routine that you enjoy. Here are a few ways you can do this:

  • Light a candle: Light a candle before each meditation session to create a sense of ritual and signal the start of your meditation time.

  • Use a meditation bell: Ring a meditation bell to mark the beginning and end of your meditation session. This has the added bonus of letting everyone else in your household know that you must absolutely not be disturbed 🙂
  • Burn incense: Burn incense or essential oils to create a calming and peaceful atmosphere.
  • Make a cup of tea: Prepare a cup of tea or a warm drink before meditation to create a sense of ritual and relaxation.
  • Meditation journal: Keep a meditation journal to record your thoughts, insights, and progress.
  • Meditation beads: Use mala beads or a rosary to help you focus and keep track of your breath.
  • Guided meditation resources: Place guided meditation resources, such as books or apps, in your meditation space to help you stay on track.
  • And most importantly, enjoy your mediation corner!

Final Thoughts

As you create your meditation corner, remember that it’s not just about the physical space – it’s about the intention and energy you bring to it. By dedicating physical space to meditating you are committing to prioritizing the wellbeing of your mind, body and spirit and there really isn’t anything better than that!
