Do you ever feel like life is a battle? You’re not wrong. But perhaps the enemy isn’t who we often think it is. Even though it can sometimes feel like it, our fight isn’t against difficult circumstances, frustrating people, or even our own shortcomings.

The Apostle Paul pulls back the curtain in Ephesians and shows us the true nature of our struggle: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

The battle is spirtual and it is fought every day in our hearts and minds.

We fight against the temptation to think that God is not good, that we are alone, or even the temptation to give up when life gets really tough.

But here is the very best news: God has not left us defenseless.

This July, we invite you to join us as we walk through a powerful and practical 31-day Bible reading plan that focuses on the Armor of God and Ephesians 6:10-18.

We’re going to take a look at each piece of armor one by one. We’ll learn what each one means, how to wear it each day, and how to use it.

What this July Armor of God Bible Reading Plan Covers

In the Roman world of Paul’s day, every soldier understood his armor really well. Each piece had a very specific purpose for survival and victory, and a soldier would never dream of going into battle without being fully suited up.

In the same way, our spiritual enemy is very real and strategic (1 Peter 5:8). His attacks are often subtle and targeted. The Armor of God is God’s direct answer to these attacks. and how we never have to face a challenge in our own power.

Week 1: The Battle & The Armor

Before we start learning about our armor, we first need to understand the fight we’re actually in.

Ephesians 6:10–13 reminds us that our strength comes from the Lord, not our own willpower. The battles we face aren’t against people but rather against lies, shame, fear, and spiritual opposition that tries to pull us away from God’s truth.

This week, you’ll discover:

  • Where your real strength comes from (Ephesians 6:10–13)
  • What your battle actually looks like (2 Corinthians 10:3–4)
  • How to resist the enemy and win (1 Peter 5:8–9, James 4:7)
  • God’s promise of life and victory (John 10:10, Romans 8:37)

Week 2: The Belt of Truth & The Breastplate of Righteousness

Truth is the first piece of armor. It holds everything else together and in place – just like a belt does! The Bible tells us that Jesus doesn’t just speak the truth; He is the truth (John 14:6). So, when you know Him, you can walk free from fear and deception (John 8:32).

When we wear the belt of truth, we reject the enemy’s lies and the world’s deceptions, and instead we choose to base our identity, decisions, and beliefs on the truth of God’s Word.

Next comes the Breastplate of Righteousness. In Roman times, the breastplate protected the soldier’s heart and other vital organs when he went into battle. In the same way, the Breastplate of Righteousness also protects our heart – our emotions, and our spiritual core.

Week 3: The Shoes of Peace & The Shield of Faith

These next two pieces of God’s armor are for movement and deflecting attacks.

First up, the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace. Just like a Roman soldier’s sandals gave him a firm footing, so too the Shoes of Peace help us to stand firm no matter what comes our way.

Next is the Shield of Faith. The Roman soldier’s shield was a large, door-shaped shield that could defend him against attacks from the enemy. Likewise, the Shield of Faith is our trust in God’s promises and character, which we use to defend against lies, doubts, fears, and temptations that the enemy throws at us.

Week 4: The Helmet of Salvation & The Sword of the Spirit

The final two pieces of the Armor of God protect our minds and give us a weapon to fight back.

The Helmet of Salvation protects our minds and guards against attacks on our identity in Christ. Thoughts like “You are not saved,” “God doesn’t love you,” or “You have no future” can be devastating if we are not confident that our salvation is a secure, past, present, and future reality.

Finally, we have The Sword Of The Spirit. This is the only offensive weapon we have – it is the Word of God. It is Scripture that is read, spoken, memorized and applied to daily life with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Just like Jesus used the Word to counter Satan’s temptations in the wilderness (Matthew 4), we can also use it to defeat him.

Week 5: Prayer – Our Secret Weapon

There’s one more piece of armor that holds it all together: Prayer. Prayer keeps your armor strong and your heart aligned with God.

Scripture tells us to:

  • Pray on all occasions (Ephesians 6:18)
  • Replace anxiety with peace through prayer (Philippians 4:6–7)
  • Stay devoted and watchful (Colossians 4:2)
