What Colors Make Gray?

The simplest way to make the color gray is by mixing black and white together in equal amounts. For lighter shades of gray, add more white while for darker shades you can use more black.

However, gray can also be made by mixing primary colors such as red, blue, and yellow. But it isn’t just primary colors that you can use, you can also use complementary colors (colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel). Complementary colors include red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and purple. The shade of gray will change depending on what colors you use as the base.

This is handy to know if you would like to make gray without using black or white!

Interesting Fact! Both “grey” and “gray” are the correct spellings of the same word, and they can be used interchangeably. However “grey” is more commonly used in British English, while “gray” is more commonly used in American English.
